TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Knowledge Sharing
actionable. A key focus will be the development of concise, easily digestible content, such as short videos and digital explainers. These will support members in understanding key issues and developments – whether they are new to sustainability, or already delivering Net Zero strategies on the ground.

A central area of focus for the MDTP is the development and promotion of the Authorising Engineer (Medical Devices) [AE (MD)] role. This role is vital for ensuring robust governance, regulatory compliance, and safe deployment of medical technologies within healthcare settings. As part of this initiative, the Platform has developed a set of governance questions aligned with the MHRA’s Managing Medical Devices (2021) guidance. These questions are now embedded within the IHEEM Governance Software, providing a structured approach to assessing compliance and oversight. Notably, most MDTP members are now registered AE (MD)s. The Platform is also deeply involved in the training and approval process for new AE (MD)s. A three-day CPD-accredited training
course, led by Prof John Sandham, has been established as a prerequisite for AE (MD) registration. IHEEM has designated MTS as the official provider of this training. All participants must read the MHRA’s Managing Medical Devices document in advance, and successful completion of the course is mandatory for AE (MD) application approval. Each application is reviewed by a panel of three MDTP members to ensure consistency and rigor.
Beyond developing the AE (MD) role,
the MDTP actively promotes IHEEM membership through presentations at key industry events, such as the EBME Expo. These outreach efforts aim to underscore the value of professional affiliation, and

Communication: The first theme is centred on improving how we communicate sustainability across the IHEEM community. This means making knowledge accessible, engaging, and
the critical contribution that AE (MD)s make to patient safety and the effective management of healthcare technology. The Platform also engages in broader
strategic discussions, including the future development of Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) related to medical devices. One proposal under consideration is the creation of a dedicated HTM specifically addressing medical devices, reflecting the growing complexity and importance of this field in modern healthcare.
Driving sustainability Forward: IHEEM relaunches Advisory Panel with renewed focus
Steven Heape, ESAP Chair
The IHEEM Sustainability Advisory Panel was relaunched at the end of last year with a refreshed purpose and an ambitious agenda. Recognising the critical role of healthcare engineers in addressing the climate crisis, the panel has aligned its efforts around three strategic themes designed to build knowledge, foster collaboration, and support evidence-based action. These are:
Engagement: The second theme recognises that IHEEM does not operate in isolation. Sustainability is a cross- sector challenge, and progress depends on collaboration. The Panel is prioritising engagement with the wider ecosystem – bringing together expertise from partner organisations, academic institutions, regional networks, and professional bodies. By building stronger connections, IHEEM aims to ensure that its members are not only well-informed but also well-represented in wider conversations shaping the sector.
Research: Staying at the forefront of change requires a clear line of sight to emerging research. The third theme focuses on ensuring that IHEEM is contributing to, and drawing insight from, current sustainability research programmes. The Panel will work to translate research findings into practical takeaways, ensuring that members benefit from the latest thinking and innovation. To ground its efforts, the Panel is launching a short research survey across the IHEEM membership. This will help assess current awareness levels and identify priority areas where targeted support and knowledge sharing can have the greatest impact. After all, IHEEM exists to serve its members, so listening to their needs is the logical first step. This renewed focus marks an exciting new chapter in IHEEM’s sustainability journey. With clear direction and strong member input, the Panel is committed to helping our profession lead the charge towards a low-carbon, resilient healthcare future.
