TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Driving Standards
protection) that follows the guidance in IHEEM’s ‘Fire safety technical platform (FSTP) guidance document No. 1 – Fire compartmentation’.” Work continues with assisting on the production of HTM – currently with HTM 05-01: Managing Healthcare Fire Safety, where three members of the FSTP – Stephen Ball, Anthony Pitcher, and Mazin Daoud, are involved with the document. The HTM is likely to be published this year, and will also reference the IHEEM FSTP as a source of information, especially for fire safety protocols.
The FSTP has a number of new and
exciting challenges ahead, working with partners such as the National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers. This includes developing a credentialing platform based on the soon-to-be-published HTM 05-01, which may include independent external advisers and Authorised Persons. In addition to those members already mentioned, Platform members include Peter Aldridge and Jason Thompson, and we have welcomed a new member, Oliver Brooke. If anyone would like to become a member of the FSTP, please let IHEEM Head Office know.
Health and Safety Advisory Platform

The Health and Safety Advisory Platform (H&SAP) is a new addition to IHEEM, having officially held its first minuted meeting in February 2025. The Platform has been created to address areas of health and safety not already covered by IHEEM’s existing Technical or Advisory Platforms. Its purpose is to support healthcare engineering and estates professionals with practical guidance, shared learning, and best practice, on key safety topics that impact the sector. While still in its early stages, the
platform is made up of a growing group of professionals who are committed to improving standards and providing meaningful input into health and safety matters within healthcare estates. One of our key aims moving forward is to broaden the group’s representation, drawing in members with experience and knowledge across a wide range of health and safety disciplines. We are particularly keen to
welcome individuals from operational, strategic, and specialist backgrounds, to ensure that the advice and support we provide reflects the full complexity of the working environment. The scope of the H&SAP includes a number of health and safety areas that are often relevant, but not formally addressed elsewhere within IHEEM structures. These include, but are not limited to: asbestos management, confined spaces, working at height, contractor management, hazardous substances, CDM (Construction Design and Management Regulations), DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations), noise at work, electromagnetic fields, and emergency planning and resilience. These topics are frequently encountered within healthcare estates settings, but often present unique challenges that require a tailored and consistent approach. The Platform has been formed with the
following objectives: 1 To provide practical guidance and suggest solutions for health and safety concerns raised by other IHEEM Platforms, committees, or individual members.
2 To support continuous improvement in how health and safety is managed within healthcare engineering and estates settings.
3 To develop and share resources that promote good practice, compliance, and professional learning.
Since its formation, the Platform has already taken a proactive approach. Our first action was to design and conduct a health and safety survey, seeking views
from across the industry on how health and safety is currently understood, prioritised, and applied. The feedback received has been instrumental in shaping our early direction. Based on this input, the group has begun preparing business cases for key areas where further attention is needed. We are also in the process of developing guidance documents that will be made available to members in due course. Looking ahead, the H&SAP aims
to play an active and responsive role within IHEEM. We will listen carefully to feedback, identify where further clarity or guidance are needed, and help coordinate expertise to fill those gaps. Our goal is to provide a platform that supports safer working, informed decision-making, and improved outcomes across the healthcare estates sector. If you have an interest in contributing or would like to learn more, we welcome contact from all.
The Medical Devices Technical Platform
John Sandham, MDTP Chair
The IHEEM Medical Devices Technical Platform (MDTP) plays a key role in advancing the effective management of medical devices across the NHS, with a strong emphasis on improving patient safety. The Platform holds regular meetings to review ongoing initiatives, set future priorities, and share insights that support innovation and best practices.
