TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Institute Platforms
THE KEY ROLE OF IHEEM’S TECHNICAL AND ADVISORY PLATFORMS IN FOCUS
For the second year running at Healthcare Estates 2025 – IHEEM’s annual flagship conference and exhibition – the Institute’s branches and Technical and Advisory platforms will be represented in the IHEEM Members’ Lounge as part of a series of dedicated drop-in sessions across the two day event – full details of the schedules can be found on the Updates page.
Attendees at the Healthcare Estates 2025 exhibition will be able to meet with members of the Platforms to learn more about their activities and contributions to their wider respective sectors, as well as understand more about becoming an IHEEM member in order to join a platform related to given disciplines and areas of work. In a first look at a number of IHEEM Technical and Advisory Platforms ahead of the conference and drop-in sessions, Chairs and members from a number of the Platforms give an overview of the remit of the groups, recent initiatives, and plans for the future.
Electrical Technical Platform
Paul Harris, ETP Chair
The Electrical Technical Platform (ETP) consists of a number of electrical engineers from across the IHEEM membership. These engineers have a breadth of experience from design, installation, and maintenance of both HV and LV systems. The ETP has considerable involvement in the development and maintenance of British Standards that affect healthcare design. The Platform has direct involvement at all levels within development of BS 7671, as well as the international work with the IEC 60364 series of documents, which heavily influence future editions of BS

7671, often referred to as the ‘Wiring Regulations’. Where we have the appropriate skill, ETP members support the UK national committees in areas such as emergency supply and resilience planning, and the effects of current through human beings and livestock. The ETP also contributes to other documents, such as HTMs, and is heavily involved in updating Health Technical Memoranda guidance.
Health Technical Memoranda The ETP’s primary focus is to support
the Institute’s membership in all matters electrical, and the Platform will thus be providing technical support pocket book information, and holding technical seminars and workshops over the forthcoming months. We have been heavily involved in the work towards the 2026 version of BS 7671,
which we believe will have a positive impact for electrical installations in medical locations. This Autumn will see the publication of pocket guides jointly produced by IHEEM and Certsure. The aim of these is to bring clarity to technical issues in small, bite-sized chunks. We actively invite members to comment on, or bring forward, technical matters which may be of concern, or could assist members with their daily duties and may also form future topics for future pocket books. Further information about our activities can be found on our section of the IHEEM website.
Fire Safety Technical Platform – time for the Platform to grow wings
Mazin Daoud, FSTP member
The Fire Safety Technical Platform has been in existence for over seven years, during which it has led the way in healthcare-specific guidance, including developing evidence-based, risk- assessed protocols for maintaining fire compartmentation, fire dampers, and fire doors. These guidance documents were referenced in HTM 05-03 Part K Guidance on fire risk assessment in complex healthcare premises, published in 2024, which says: “The healthcare organisation should have a protocol for the checking of PFP (passive fire
