Vacuum drainage tackles hidden infection risks in hospitals
A recent peer-reviewed study (Infection Prevention in Practice, 2025) revealed that hospital toilets and drainage systems can act as long-term reservoirs for multidrug-resistant bacteria, including Klebsiella oxytoca – with contaminated toilet water being the primary source of infection. This is a growing concern in the UK, where over half of NHS hospitals have reported sewage leaks, says Healthcare Estates exhibitor, JETS Vacuum AS. Royal Cornwall Hospital has addressed this risk by installing JETS vacuum drainage systems,

supplied by Otter Vacuum. JETS Vacuum AS added: “Unlike traditional systems, vacuum technology uses closed piping and negative pressure to extract waste and up to 50 litres of air per flush – eliminating open sewage reservoirs where dangerous biofilms thrive. “Here the new system improved hygiene,
reduced installation disruption, and avoided extensive groundworks. It’s already been adopted in the hospital’s Oncology and MRI units, and is being considered for future upgrades. “This is more than a plumbing upgrade – it’s about stopping infections before they start,” said Andrew Hay, director at Otter Vacuum.
The maintenance procurement solution
