is no longer an irritant. In conclusion, the addition of 3.5% glycine betaine to a mixed surfactant solution significantly reduces protein degradation and mitigates the harmful effects of surfactants.

Patch tests show that glycine betaine mitigates irritation Irritant patch testing with sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) is a routine test used for experimental skin irritation studies. This test was performed on 25 healthy volunteers with

greater reductions in skin irritation. Glycine betaine reduced the solubilization

of Zein protein by surfactants. This correlates with reduced skin irritation by surfactant solution in vivo. Glycine betaine can be used in rinse-off formulas containing surfactants in order to protect the skin from irritation and maintain it in good condition despite frequent use of these products.

Adding glycine betaine to hand sanitizer gels contributes to improving the sensory profile of formulations and to keeping skin moisturized Improved sensory profile of the Soft Touch Hand sanitizer formulation When added to a hand sanitizer gel containing 50% alcohol (Table 1), a combination of glycine betaine and glycerin notably improves the sensory profile of the formula, called “Soft Touch Hand Sanitizer”.10

clinical evaluation of the irritation scores after 24 and 48 hours of occlusion. The test was performed using a 10% SLES solution either unmodified or with 3.5%, 5% or 7% glycine betaine added (Fig 3). Adding glycine betaine at levels of 3.5%

and over produced a highly significant reduction in the irritant potential of solutions of SLES. This is consistent with the previous findings of Nicander et al.8

The effect is

concentration dependent, with higher concentrations of glycine betaine leading to

Sanitizer gel has higher peaking and integrity of shape initially and after 10 seconds (Fig 4). At the same time, it demonstrates improved thickness without compromising spreadability. 5 minutes after application, the Soft Touch formula feels powdery and silicone like, leading to a silky finished sensation. Hand skin is smooth and soft even after applying the Soft Touch Hand Sanitizer gel formulation containing 50% alcohol.

Improved skin moisturization with the Soft Touch Hand sanitizer The clinical study was performed on 30 healthy volunteers with dry skin. The product was applied to the legs every 2 hours from 0 to 6 hours (2mg/cm²). A skin dryness score was evaluated by an expert using a visual scale from 0 to 5. Superficial skin moisturization was evaluated using a Skicon 200EX (IBS Company, Japan), to measure skin conductance in microsiemens (µS). Measurements were taken every two hours from a baseline of 0 up to 8 hours, and an additional dryness evaluation score was assessed 24hs after the initial application. Two hand sanitizers with 50% alcohol were tested, Soft Touch Hand Sanitizer10

An additional untreated area of skin was also reserved. The results demonstrate that repeated

application of the control hand sanitizers significantly reduces the skin conductance measurement, indicating a dehydrating effect on the skin surface (Fig 5). By contrast, application of Soft Touch Hand Sanitizer increases the skin moisturization for up to 8 hours, with the effect lasting at least 2 hours after the final application. Clinical scoring demonstrates that Soft

Touch Hand Sanitizer significantly decreases the visual dryness score 2 hours, 8 hours and even 24 hours after the first application (Fig 6). This clinical study clearly demonstrates the
