Finnish cosmetic ingredients maker Nordic Bioproducts has appointed C.Q. Massó to distribute its microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) product in Spain and Portugal. Produced from wood, MCC is

marketed as a replacement for talc, titanium dioxide, and fossil- based ingredients in personal care products. Nordic Bioproducts recently

BASF wins China approval for

Symbiocell plant-based active BASF has obtained approval to market its Symbiocell natural plant- based cosmetic active ingredient in China.

The active is based on an extract

of Cestrum latifolium leaves for which BASF recently obtained new cosmetic ingredient notification in China. Symbiocell (INCI: Water (and)

Butylene Glycol (and) Cestrum Latifolium Leaf Extract (and) Xanthan Gum (and) Propanediol (and) Caprylyl Glycol), focuses on soothing sensitive skin and excessive cutaneous reactions. The active is proven through

in vitro tests to support healthy levels of the basal expression of CD86 in skin dendritic cells. It effectively soothes sensitive

skin and potentially excessive cutaneous reactions. Cestrum latifolium, is well

known in tropical regions for its healing properties and has known

applications for a variety of skin issues.

The ingredient was developed

in response to a growing consumer trend for cosmetic products that address common sensitive skin concerns, with Asia-Pacific being the key region in focus. A double-blind clinical study

was conducted on 31 women to compare the efficacy of a 2% concentration of Symbiocell in a face care formulation to that of a commercially available soothing, anti-redness skin care product over a three-week application period. The results showed that cutaneous discomfort that was previously observed during a stinging test conducted on the side of the face treated with Symbiocell at 2% significantly diminished by 62%, while the average decrease for the side of the face treated with the benchmark product was 58%.

safer and more sustainable beauty industry,” said Nordic Bioproducts CEO Olli Kähkönen. “Our collaborations go beyond distribution; together, we’re exploring MCC’s potential to replace fossil-based and other harmful ingredients in innovative new formulations,” he added. Berta Oncins, department

manager of C.Q. Massó, said: “Our collaboration with Nordic Bioproducts reflects our shared vision for advancing beauty formulations with ingredients that are not only safe and sustainable but also meet the high- performance demands of today’s cosmetics industry.”

USA FDA proposes mandatory tests for asbestos in cosmetics

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed mandatory tests to detect and identify asbestos in talc-containing cosmetics. The proposed rule, entitled

‘Testing Methods for Detecting and Identifying Asbestos in Talc- Containing Cosmetic Products’, if finalized, would require manufacturers of talc-containing cosmetic products to test their products for asbestos using specific testing methods. FDA does not currently require

any specific method or approach to test for asbestos in talc-

containing cosmetic products. The proposed rule, it said, will

help protect consumers who use talc-containing cosmetic products from harmful exposure. This proposal is part of

the agency’s work to fulfil the requirements of section 3505 of the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 (MoCRA). For more information, visit
