Can Smaller Studios Still Break Through?

reason to carry it alongside their own content.

Are operators taking enough risks on new suppliers? Yes, when the product is genuinely differentiated. Tier-one operators including bet365, Betano, Superbet, BetMGM, Entain, and Flutter all went live with Playbook Football within 12 months of its launch and are now excited to introduce Play- book Football ’27 with its new betting markets and deeper player progression to customers. Te product works for these operators precisely because it isn't just another casino game or free- play sports product bolted onto a sportsbook; it's a genuinely new vertical that gives players a degree of skill, strategy and ownership over the outcome. When Tier 1 operators commit, they can demonstrate their faith in a product launch with strong homepage positioning, real promotional support, the kind of backing that actually moves the needle. Regulatory caution obviously shapes

what they're willing to take on; a more aggressive game would get a very different reception than the social, community-driven product we built at Playbook Fusion. Te forward-looking operators genuinely want innovation and don't want to stand still, and that's the opening independent studios need to look for.

What advice would you give an ambitious in- dependent studio entering the market today? My biggest piece of advice would be to lead with differentiation. You need to solve a real problem for players or operators, and another crash game or another slot that undercuts the incumbents on price isn't going to do that. Don't try to out- negotiate the big players on price or scale, because you will lose that fight every time. Use aggregators to reach the market, absolutely, but also invest in your own operator relationships directly. Being known as a recognised, trusted partner opens doors that cold pitches never will.

Get to a minimum viable product, launch it,

and iterate relentlessly. Playbook Football ‘27 is an evolution of over 15 iterations of the game we originally launched, and that pace of iteration has been central to how we've improved the product and kept it relevant. Get it into players' hands early, too: we ran extensive user group testing before launch and learned that external input to tell you whether a game is too complicated, too easy, or whether the UI actually makes sense is vital. You also need to build your data infra- structure from day one; at Playbook Fusion we built an extensive analytics stack behind the game to capture exactly how it's being played so that we could continually iterate with real precision. Finally, commit to building an actual brand and identity, and stand behind the games you make. None of this guarantees success, but it does put the odds back in your favour, and in a market that is often stacked against small players, that's the edge worth chasing.
