P12 WIRE / PULSE / INSIGHT / REPORTS

Te Ministry of Consumption has launched a new public health campaign aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of gambling addiction.

According to the government the number of new online players under the age of 25 in Spain has grown exponentially in recent years, going from 28 per cent in 2016 to 48 per cent in 2021.

Although the data does not mean that they have a problem, the number is a worrying trend according to the Ministry of Consumption, which has just launched the #PERO awareness campaign to warn of the risks of gambling.

Te #PERO campaign highlights young people using phrases beginning with “but . . .” to provide excuses or justifications for their gambling related problems.

During the presentation for the campaign, Minister Alberto Garzón warned of the “serious risks” that these games and bets entail. Te minister stated that the responsibility for a

person becoming addicted to gambling is not only down to the individual but also is the social and a public responsibility of “first order’.

He stated that it is not the same “to live in a neighbourhood where the public authorities and civil society have worked to fill it with accessible and affordable cultural and sports options, than in one suffocated by the kidnapping of its public space with the streets full of halls and betting houses.”

Te campaign and Garzón’s comments understandably has caused outrage amongst the private sector. A number of editorials have accused the minister of using public money to push state sponsored gambling while condemning the private sector.

In addition, the state is expanding its monopoly. In September Spanish lottery company Sociedad Estatal Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (SELAE) extended the number of draws per week for its Bonoloto product.

Norway Kindred to contest coercive fine with NGA

Kindred Group, via its wholly owned Maltese subsidiary Trannel International Ltd, has been informed that the Norwegian Gaming Authority will reinstate a coercive fine.

Trannel has performed several changes in its offering to ensure compliance with the requirements set out by the Norwegian Gaming Authority in the cease-and-desist order from 2019.

Kindred Group disagrees with the legal basis for the non- enforceable fine and has announced it will continue to challenge this in the courts.

Tese changes have been undertaken to clarify that the company is not targeting Norwegian residents. Kindred is implementing the following changes in line with requirements from the NGA:

l

Changing language on all sites from to English;

l

Removing Norwegian flags from websites and channels;

l

Changing name on Storspiller to non- Norwegian name;

l

Discontinuing all advertising activities in Norwegian;

l

No Norwegian speaking customer service agents.

Despite these changes and Trannel’s communication to the contrary, Kindred Group has stated that the NGA ‘incorrectly claims’ that Trannel’s offering still targets Norwegian residents and has therefore decided to reinstate the coercive fine.

Trannel disagrees with the NGA’s assessment as it is fully legal for Norwegian residents to access and use international gambling services, which are licensed in the EU/EEA area and offered within a safe and secure environment.
