Individualized Customer Service Key to EMS Success

By Raymond Kaps, Senior Account Executive, CE3 Electronics, Inc. T

o run an effective manufactur- ing enterprise, it takes much more than a building contain-

ing tools and equipment. Like a suc- cessful sports franchise, building a talented team with the right level of commitment can often take years. Founded in 1985, in New

Brunswick, Canada, CE3 Electronics initially focused on magnetics manu- facturing. From there, the evolution to assembling PCBs was a natural progression. Throughout the rest of Atlantic Canada, the demand was high — so much so that PCB assem- bly became the fastest growing seg- ment of the company. The company started with one

SMT line and two wave solder ma- chines for both leaded and lead-free PCB assemblies. The company estab- lished many strong customer rela- tionships that drove profits and cre- ated a need for more equipment. CE3 selected Juki as its stan-

dard for SMT line equipment, based on speed, accuracy, and most impor- tantly, reliability. With customers re- lying on CE3 shipments to meet end product commitments, being able to meet promised delivery dates became an essential part of CE3’s service of- ferings. CE3 Electronics’ managers and

engineers worked diligently to achieve a range of certifications. These certifi- cations include AS9100C, ISO9001: 2008, IPC-A-610 (Class I, II, III), IPC/WHMA-A-620A (Class I, II, III) and Canadian Controlled Goods Direc- torate (CGD). With these qualifications, the

company began to service industry manufacturing requirements in mul- tiple arenas, such as HVAC, ancil-

panel and box build integration. New Dedicated Facility The company’s entire staff has

always been focused on individual- ized customer service. CE3 endeav- ored to be able to offer fairly-priced, high-quality products, in a timely manner, as the company standard. With a staff of 60 employees in 2008, annual sales grew steadily. As

the new plant is a larger potting and conformal coating department. More customers had been demanding in- house potting and conformal coating services to improve quality control, reduce shipping and handling costs and product time to market. To bet- ter serve these customers, the com- pany recently purchased a highly-ac- curate automated conformal coating system.

lary microwave products and engine controllers. It wasn’t long before CE3 Elec-

tronics acquired an additional build- ing. The new facility expanded the company’s manufacturing capabili- ties to include products for rail car lighting, custom cable and wire har- ness assembly, as well as control

the company grew, both of its build- ings became overcrowded. As a re- sult, the company invested in a brand-new 45,000 ft2 (4,181m2) facil- ity, designed specifically for electron- ics manufacturing. The new plant incorporates the

partial turnkey PCB assembly, lead- ed and lead-free soldering assembly, SMT/through-hole/hybrid PCB as- sembly, wire harness and cable man- ufacturing, custom wound magnet- ics, PCB layout and prototyping, con- formal coating and potting, and com- prehensive design engineering for RF and lighting controls. The company also has a dedicat-

ed electronics design engineering team whose role it is to bring cus- tomers’ electronics designs to life, whether starting from scratch or simply finalizing an existing design. CE3 Electronics offers electronics de- sign, design assistance, prototyping,
