Comet Lab One: A Collaborative Environment to Spark Innovation

By Staff Editor, U.S Tech C

omet Group is a Swiss compa- ny with a global presence. In the past 10 years, the company has vertically integrated into up- stream systems, and there now are three technologies and solutions un- der Comet: YXLON, Comet Plasma Control Technologies (PCT) and ebeam. These brands are in demand for such applications as non-destruc- tive testing and security inspection, the coating and treatment of surfaces and non-contact sterilization. YXLON develops and markets X-ray systems, as well as tubes, while Comet PCT vertically inte- grates vacuum capacitors into cus- tom RF impedance matching units for advanced chemical vapor deposi- tion (CVD) and etch processes for semiconductor device manufacturers and OEMs. The electron beam tech- nologies from ebeam are used in the areas of sterilization, curing and thin film, and are integrated into end- user processing systems.

Comet Group currently has ap- proximately 1,200 employees, more than 200 of whom are focused on re- search and development. A new San Jose office was recently opened to sup- port a growing roster of Silicon Valley- based customers. Comet Group’s Lab One is located in this facility.

More than a Showcase

Lab One is more than just a tech- nology showcase. For customers, Lab One is a working lab and testing envi- ronment that acts as an extension of their business. It provides testing services and access to a think tank of industry experts available for consul- tation, brainstorming and problem solving. At the core of Comet Group’s success with its customers in Silicon Valley are the trusted and collabora- tive relationships it has developed. Lab One center allows Comet to work closely with its customers early in the product development process. This creates tremendous learning op-

portunities and value for all parties. This is the first testing lab of its kind to offer a “pay-as-you-go,” serv- ice-model approach. This allows cus- tomers to test under real-world con- ditions and gather the data they need to improve quality, increase yields and achieve repeatability. Lab One is a hands-on ap- plications center that is de- signed to encourage engineers to work on tomorrow’s problems today. The open, collaborative environment sparks ideas that result in new solutions, even be- yond what the engineers may originally come in to work on. What differentiates Comet Group’s Lab One center from other labs is the variety of tech- nological competence that cus- tomers encounter. This is based on the depth and breadth of technologies and real-world testing environments that it can create. This enables the compa- ny to provide customers with so- lutions that best fit their specif- ic needs. The lab’s success stems from the deep technical ex- pertise from 50 years of experi- ence and the company’s ability to col- laborate with its customers early in their product development processes.

Three Key Technologies

Comet PCT designs and manu- factures high-tech plasma control products. These are used to make semiconductors, which are turned into computer chips. The company’s RF power products improve the perform- ance of the equipment the customers use to create the chips used in comput-

often used in the aerospace, automo- tive, electronics, and medical fields. They are also used by museums and universities to view potential defects in devices or samples that are 200 times smaller than a human hair. These non-destructive testing capabil- ities help customers to optimize yield and create better products.

The electron beam technology of ebeam Technologies is used by many companies in the semiconductor, medical and industrial markets. The company designs, manufactures and integrates systems that master the electron. Customers use this technol- ogy to refine existing materials and create new ones, as well as to devel- op cleaner processes and achieve greater resource efficiencies. This technology can reduce en- ergy consumption in some industrial processes by up to 80 percent. It also eliminates the need for some toxic chemicals in certain industrial appli- cations.

By collaborating with local cus- tomers and providing the space for ex- perimentation with advanced technol- ogy, Lab One is helping solve some of the industry’s biggest challenges. At the end of the day, the goal is to enable companies to build better components and to bring higher-quality and more reliable products to market.
