Martinis and his group, from the de- velopment of a single superconduct- ing qubit to systems including archi- tectures of 72 and, with Sycamore, 54 qubits (one did not perform) that take advantage of the both awe-in- spiring and bizarre properties of quantum mechanics. “The algorithm was chosen to

emphasize the strengths of the quan- tum computer by leveraging the nat- ural dynamics of the device,” says Ben Chiaro, another graduate stu- dent researcher in the group. That is, the researchers wanted to test the computer’s ability to hold and rapid- ly manipulate a vast amount of com- plex, unstructured data. “We basically wanted to produce

an entangled state involving all of our qubits as quickly as we can,” Foxen says, “We settled on a sequence of op- erations that produced a complicated superposition state that, when meas- ured, returns bitstring with a proba- bility determined by the specific se- quence of operations used to prepare that particular superposition.” The exercise, which was to verify

that the circuit’s output correspond to the sequence used to prepare the state, sampled the quantum circuit a million times in just a few minutes, exploring all possibilities — before the system could lose its quantum coherence. While the experiment was cho- sen as a proof-of-concept for the com-

puter, the research has resulted in a very real and valuable tool — a certi- fied random number generator. Use- ful in a variety of fields, random numbers can ensure that encrypted keys can not be guessed, or that a sample from a larger population is truly representative, leading to opti- mal solutions for complex problems and more robust machine learning applications. The speed with which the quan-

tum circuit can produce its random- ized bit string is so great that there is no time to analyze and “cheat” the system. Web: www.ucsb.edu r

EMSG Partners with MIRTEC and Hanwha Techwin

2008. We purchased our first Han- wha (then Samsung) 421 pick-and- place machine in 2009. We have since added five more Hanwha ma- chines,” says Hamp. He adds that the company first

decided to purchase equipment from MIRTEC and Hanwha due to their technology and service. “MIRTEC’s technology has given EMSG the abili- ty to inspect all of our circuit board as- semblies at the utmost quality, giving us confidence in all the circuit board assemblies leaving our facility,” he says. “Hanwha’s technology has given us the ability to assemble any circuit board technology all in one machine. Hanwha also has provided us with a solution to build circuit boards up to 48 inches in size. The technology has given us a significant advantage in the highly competitive industry of con- tract manufacturing.” Because the company has been

so pleased with the technology from both companies, it purchased a new system from each at the 2019 SMTA International exhibition — the MIRTEC MV-3 OMNI 3D desktop AOI machine and HANWHA’s ESE model LX3 large-format printer. “We purchased the MV-3 OMNI

3D because of the advancements MIRTEC has made in AOI technolo- gy. This new system is capable of looking at components and solder joints in 3D, giving our inspectors even more precision in looking at our circuit boards. This system is capable of mapping a board for inspection us- ing the Gerber files we use to create the board. This will cut programming time in half and allow us to inspect a greater quantity of circuit boards,” Hamp explains. “We had already

purchased a Hanwha Techwin ESE model LX3 large-format printer in 2017, but we needed to add another to keep up with demand for circuit boards in excess of the standard 24 inches that most printers handle. This will continue to help EMSG be the industry leader in continuous four-foot circuit boards.” MIRTEC provides customers

with a full range of services that in- clude consultation,

installation,

equip ment training, and after-sales support. It focuses heavily on continu- al improvement with the purpose of constantly increasing the value of the products and services provided to cus- tomers. Brian D’Amico, president of MIRTEC, says, “We listen to our cus- tomers’ needs and deliver prompt service. We consistently work to ex- ceed their expectations. We aim to bring positive changes to their busi- ness. In short, our ultimate objective is the absolute success of our cus- tomers. We are extremely proud of our partnership with EMSG and are equally committed to their goal of continuous quality improvement.” In working with both compa-

nies, Hamp stresses the importance and value of service just as much as technology. “Customer service from both companies is unparalleled. Both companies will have a field service technician here at the drop of a hat if we need them. Brian D’Amico of MIRTEC, as well as Jonny Nichols and Bob Watters of Hanwha, are fan- tastic individuals to deal with and al- ways go above and beyond.” Contact: EMSG, Inc., 951
