The Consumers’ Association of Ireland The Consumers’ Association of Ireland is a private, not-for- profit organisation set up to protect and promote the interests of consumers. Members pay an annual membership fee to join and in return they receive a consumer magazine, Consumer Choice, and advice on consumer rights. The Consumers’ Association: • Publishes reports and surveys into consumer products and services. • Highlights problem areas where the interests of consumers are being neglected and seek improved product quality standards.
• Runs a consumer advice service to help members with consumer problems and complaints. For a small fee, the association’s solicitor will provide speedy professional legal advice on consumer issues.
• Lobbies the government for changes and improvements to consumer rights legislation.
Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland (ASAI) The Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland promotes fair advertising and promotion. If you object to a piece of advertising, you can make a complaint online using its website. However, as it is a private organisation funded by advertising companies, it has no legal power to force businesses to change or to stop any piece of advertising. It can only express its disapproval.
