Ellen Rieder is a managing director in the Americas Broking Group and works with the terrorism specialty practice. She played a crucial role for Guy Carpenter over the past two years as uncertainty surrounding the renewal of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program Reauthorisation Act (TRIPRA) weighed on the re/insurance industry and the entire US in general. Her team offers the industry’s most advanced web-based platform to help clients quantify and manage their terrorism risks. As a senior broker with more than 20 years in the reinsurance industry, Rieder’s experience has been focused in the property and casualty areas. She works as an account executive on both the regional (greater New York) and national levels. In addition, she serves as an integral part of the team developing junior talent at the company to help shape the future of Guy Carpenter. Outside of work, she is an avid golfer. Rieder came to Guy Carpenter from Wilcox.


Why did you choose to work in this industry initially? Like many young people right out of college, I was not certain what type of career I wanted and happened to fall into a career in reinsurance. I studied Accounting and Economics in school and my initial position in this field was as a treaty accountant for a Minneapolis reinsurance broking firm. After working in this role for several years, I had a desire to work in a sales position where I would be able to interact more with people versus ledgers. I have been a reinsurance broker ever since.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? One of the highlights of my career has been being able to balance my work and personal lives and being a role model for my two daughters as well as other young women in the office. Also, I have worked on the property placements for a large client over the past 20 years and was lucky enough to be part of their broking team through multiple mergers and acquisitions. Providing good service to the client and being recognised for it was a major highlight.


What has been the biggest challenge you have


encountered? Keeping current with trends in the re/insurance industry and understanding the impact to our clients. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to stay up to date with all the things that impact our clients. I continually strive to be a well-informed trusted advisor.


If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? My father would have liked me to stay on the farm in Iowa where I grew up, but I probably would have chosen something a bit more social like marketing or sales for my favourite Italian winery. I dream even at this age!
