Georgia Tsiakki joined ArgoGlobal in November 2014 as head of risk. She joined from Amlin, where she spent six years in a number of risk management positions at Group level culminating with her appointment as risk governance manager. In this role, she was responsible for overseeing and enhancing the risk management framework across the Group. Prior to this, Tsiakki served as an operational risk analyst for Lloyd’s.
Why did you choose to work in the insurance industry initially? It wasn’t something which I planned! I studied law at university and after a placement at a law firm, I realised that profession did not interest me. I started looking at master’s programmes and thought that a course in insurance and risk management sounded more interesting than anything else. Once I began the programme, I found that I really enjoyed it and have not looked back since. I joined the Brit Insurance graduate programme straight after graduating in 2005, as part of which I spent a year in underwriting—casualty reinsurance, I then rotated to internal audit, before joining the risk management team. In risk management you are exposed to every single function of
the business, you are not siloed and having that overview really appealed to me.
What has been the highlight of your career so far? It is difficult to pick one moment. There have been so many

milestones, which always feel so significant before you turn your sights to the next challenge. If anything, I think that the real highlights are still ahead of me. I have only been at ArgoGlobal for a few months, but the combination of the integrated approach which has been developed here, between the risk, capital and underwriting sides of the business, the constant communication and collaboration and the ambitions which the business has, make it particularly exciting. Risk management is a key strand of the business, with management looking for our input at every juncture. Many companies are still trying to instil that culture.
What has been the biggest challenge you have
encountered? I think the biggest challenge, particularly because of the difficult market environment which we are in now, is to ensure that you are constantly improving and developing your skillset. I am looking to build on my understanding of the more technical sides of the business, especially actuarial knowledge. That is a challenge. It is increasingly important for people to have an understanding
of other aspects of the business and look to work across different divisions. Being good at one thing is no longer sufficient, people need to have a broad understanding of each area of the business which ultimately allows you to add more value.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? It would probably have been something else in financial services, possibly banking. I enjoyed biology at school so, if not financial services, then perhaps medicine.
