Julie Ng is a managing director who is based in Guy Carpenter’s Singapore office. She is head of client support services and financial planning & analysis (CSS AP) for the Asia-Pacific region. She was named head of CSS Asia-Pacific in 2012 after Guy Carpenter’s operations in that region experienced tremendous growth during the previous five-year period and at a time when there was an unprecedented spate of natural catastrophe losses. Ng was assigned the task of integrating the Asia Pacific CSS practice into Guy Carpenter’s Global CSS operations. In her role as head of financial planning & analysis, Ng is responsible for overseeing the budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning initiatives for the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to making investments
in people, improving operating controls and
procedures, and enhancing the day-to-day service the company’s clients receive she has been a strong contributor to initiatives that deliver new processes and technology. As a result, she continues to strengthen client support services capabilities in Asia-Pacific and is helping to build a world-class service platform for Guy Carpenter’s current and future growth in the region.
Why did you choose to work in this industry initially? I joined Ernst & Young following graduation and had the opportunity to work with insurance and reinsurance clients on top of a mix portfolio of clients which comprise mainly the technology sector. Having a broad overview of different industries, I decided

to join the insurance industry which included an insurance broker and a startup insurance aggregator before my current position at Guy Carpenter. My initial decision to enter the industry is largely due to the
professionalism and financial discipline I have observed in a highly regulated insurance organisation. From my career history, this continues to be an attractive factor for staying within the industry.
What has been the highlight of your career so far? This would be the transition into my current role heading the post-reinsurance placement activities of our Asia-Pacific offices. The constant need to improve on our service delivery and differentiate Guy Carpenter from our competitors provides me with an appreciation of the qualitative aspect and the challenges of developing an efficient processing organisation. Prior to this, my responsibilities were largely focused on the financial aspect of the organisation.
What has been the biggest challenge you have
encountered? With the diverse and changing regulatory landscape in Asia- Pacific, I have to ensure we are in compliance with the regulations for each of our operating locations, as well as the locations where we trade—some of which could have an impact on our product offerings and internal processes.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? I would probably choose to pursue an academic career path.
