Dawnmarie Black is an industry leader with 24 years of broking and underwriting experience in the insurance and reinsurance industries. She has a global background, solid network and exceptional strategic development capabilities. Black has strong interpersonal and analytical skills, an excellent reputation and proven work ethic.


Why did you choose to work in the insurance industry initially? I chose to work in the industry initially because my father owned an insurance agency. I began my career working in his agency at the age of 16, handling various jobs from mailroom, to receptionist, to CSR. I was licensed to sell P&C and Life&Health insurance at the age of 18. My goal, once I graduated, was to take over my father’s agency. During college, I worked at a local insurance agency making cold calls and ultimately as a CSR. My father sold his agency, before I graduated, but I was hired by Chubb. I started my career in the Chubb Energy Resources Group as an underwriter trainee. It was an intensive 21 month long programme but was a fabulous starting point for a woman in this industry.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? I have been given the opportunity to work in the global re/ insurance market and to meet many professionals throughout the industry. Other than the opportunity to take on my role at BMS, the highlight was successfully launching a major product for Aon Benfield. I was asked to provide a proof of concept for a technology product in August 2009 and using my strong collaboration skills managed a team of people across legal, marketing, IT and broking to lead a highly successful global product launch in January 2010. I then enjoyed the opportunity to travel around the world to many of our locations selling our product internally and externally.


What has been the biggest challenge you have


encountered? While at Aon Specialty Re, we lost a large portion of our team during 9/11. It was a difficult time and we had to pull together as a team to get through the tragic loss of our colleagues and then later on to re-build our business. We had to recreate every file, as well as continue to find ways to generate revenue and run the business. I was fortunate enough to work with such an amazing group of leaders in a highly collaborative fashion. It was hard finding that sort of collaboration at other brokerage houses but I have found it again at BMS. Our team is in the building phase of an amazing global platform and I am fortunate enough to be part of this strong and dynamic team.


If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? I would have been a nurse working for the Red Cross, focused on disaster recovery. I would likely be working in the field running the logistics of a recovery operation. It is actually something I hope to move into when I finish my insurance career.
