In 2014 Jackie Bolig joined Aon Benfield as a senior managing director to develop and implement strategies for its facultative business to expand capacity and product offerings as well as pursue alternative avenues of product distribution. Although working with the global marketplace, Bolig’s key focus is the US. Bolig’s primary focus in her tenure at Aon has been to design,

market, place and maintain complex risk transfer programmes for some of the firm’s most valuable clients. She has a wide breadth of experience in multiple industry sectors, and is regarded as a key resource by her peers in brokering the most sophisticated property programmes. Bolig began working with Aon (formerly Alexander & Alexander [A&A]) in 1992 in the Risk Management Practice in Baltimore, MD. She moved to Washington DC from Baltimore in 1997 to assist in the growth of the combined Aon and A&A offices. In 2001,

the US, their presence in the US was new in 2011. Bolig worked to educate Aon’s brokers and clients on QBE’s capacity, appetite and their ability to innovate, which helped to brand them as a leading market in the US.

Why did you choose to work in this industry? A job agency recommended I consider an opportunity as an associate broker at A&A, which later became Aon. I interviewed and accepted a position at A&A in the risk management department. I remember my manager advised me that it can often take

time to receive recognition and be given a title, and that it was necessary to first prove that I was capable in the role. While that is not always true and I encourage young people to seek roles that stretch them when changing positions, it did teach me the value of patience, particularly when you are developing your signature skills. It is now 23 years later and Aon continues to provide me with challenging roles and support in my career.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? I take a lot of pride from my time running National Property for Aon Risk Solutions (ARS) Greater New York. When I assumed the role I had big shoes to fill, as both my manager and predecessor were, and still are great leaders and mentors. Both gave me the support and freedom to be able to own my own management skills. During my tenure, I was able to bring in new young talent to the team as well as recruit senior talent both from outside and within the department. It was a major highlight in my career. While I have experienced great opportunities to grow in recent

roles, I continue to look back on that role fondly, particularly as I see my former team continue to develop and assume their management roles and to be recognised as leaders among their peers.

What has been the biggest challenge you have

encountered? Unfortunately my mother was very ill for a long period before she passed away. In the month prior to her passing, I was able to spend a lot of time with her. It did require taking time away from my work in an extremely busy time and while I knew my team would perform well it was difficult to let go. Looking back I am very thankful that I was able to rely so heavily on our team.
