100 influential women in re/insurance

“While I have thought of other professions I might or should have pursued, most focused on my personal interests rather than true career options. Realistically I don’t envision any career path that would have been as fulfilling as that of insurance.”

DeLemps has responsibility for corporate risk management function which includes reserving, cat analytics and portfolio management, regulatory and risk reporting and capital modelling. Why did you choose to work in this industry initially? When I started my career, insurance companies were a good source of employment especially for women, albeit not necessarily for professional underwriting positions. I started off as a rater and learned a ton during this time working with various underwriters and brokers and getting to know the nuts and bolts of insurance. I view this experience, and the knowledge gained, as having been invaluable to my future development and success.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? I can’t point to a single event or time that I would categorise as being the highlight of my career. However I have been incredibly fortunate in having had some very strong mentors during my time in the industry. Most people are lucky to have a single mentor in their career, I had several. Their guidance and support gave me the confidence I needed to recognise that the insurance industry was a good fit for me and that I had much to contribute.

36 | INTELLIGENT INSURER | 2015 What has been the biggest challenge you have

encountered? Being a woman and a working mother in a male-dominated industry has not always been easy, personally or professionally. While the industry as a whole has not been as accepting of diversity as I would have hoped, I found it important not to be tempted to dwell on the negatives but rather to carry on and focus on the work ahead, setting personal goals and objectives. In the end, hard work, team collaboration, and results demonstrate and promote your value to an organisation.

If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? While I have thought of other professions I might or should have pursued, most focused on my personal interests rather than true career options. Realistically I don’t envision any career path that would have been as fulfilling as that of insurance.
