Why did you choose to work in this industry initially? During my senior year of college, a major reinsurer recruited on our campus and offered a position in finance which was my major line of study. After about a year into the role, I considered an opportunity in retail, but given the diverse nature of the insurance industry and the opportunities presented, I instead opted for a position in international underwriting for Latin America. The ability to travel internationally, utilise my foreign language skills, and touch virtually every industry via insurance keeps me engaged in reinsurance to this day.
What has been the highlight of your career so far? The most fascinating part of my career is the continual learning from colleagues from all areas of our organisation and the opportunities that stem from this interdependency. By operating globally, international travel and cultural nuances have broadened my view of the applications of our industry and allowed me to gain new perspectives on the business and the world as well.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered? The industry is always changing and each year brings a new challenge.
I’ve found that the toughest and most disruptive
challenges come from technological or organisational change. However, from challenge comes opportunity for growth and renewal so now embracing change is at the top of my list for finding exciting ways to move forward.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? Looking back now at all of the experiences I’ve had in reinsurance, I truly believe I’m where I should be and am more energised than ever given the opportunities ahead of us. If given the chance to do anything I chose, I’d be most at peace being a charter boat captain or a dive master in the Caribbean since nothing makes me happier than being on the water, especially with my family.
