Why did you choose to work in this industry initially? In all honesty I did not specifically choose this industry—I knew I wanted to be in financial services, so started off in the claims department for a small Lloyd’s syndicate, where I developed an interest in the industry, found myself in the right place at the right time, and the rest is history.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? The highlight of my career so far was being promoted to chief underwriting officer of Lancashire UK, and being invited to join the board. It finally felt as if the years of graft had paid off.

56 | INTELLIGENT INSURER | 2015 What has been the biggest challenge you have

encountered? The biggest challenge I have encountered professionally was trying to renew a property cat reinsurance programme, pretty much immediately post Hurricane Katrina. We got there in the end, and it was then that I fully appreciated the value of long standing relationships with the traditional markets.

If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? I would have been a lawyer.
