Kathleen Faries is the CEO of Tokio Solution Management (Tokio Solution), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokio Millennium Re (TMR). She has more than 25 years of experience in the insurance and reinsurance field including broking into the US, London and Bermuda markets as well as developing and managing captive insurance companies. Faries spearheaded the establishment of Tokio Solution in 2012, which was one of the first companies in the industry to spot the opportunities in the ILS market and alternative capital space, by providing a full service facilitator, offering services to the collateralised reinsurance market. Prior to starting up Tokio Solution, she was head of the


market solutions unit at TMR. This division was responsible for managing the fronting and transforming services TMR provided to capital market entities, as well as underwriting the company’s ILW and cat bond portfolios. Faries also serves on the boards of WiRe (Women in Reinsurance) ILS Bermuda, and Bermuda Insurance Institute (BII).


Why did you choose to work in this industry initially? Actually insurance chose me. However it has offered tremendous opportunity for professional growth over the years. I can’t think of a better industry given the breadth of different fields you can chose to specialise in across insurance and reinsurance.


What has been the highlight of your career so far? Being a part of a start-up, albeit within an existing organisation and watching the team grow and evolve has certainly been a highlight. Seeing our culture of constant customer-focused innovation and evolution take hold and start to bear fruit has been exhilarating.

Our industry is quickly transforming as a result of new technology trends and the influx of capital. Being a part of educating and helping an organisation adapt and evolve in order to compete is challenging, interesting and exciting.


If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? I joked just recently in a speech that coming out of college I wanted to be a PR executive. The reality was that I had no idea what I wanted to “be” coming out of college other than I wanted to be successful and financially independent. I am thankful that I landed in Insurance as a way to pay my bills because it has certainly afforded me constant challenges and the ability to grow both personally and professionally. I have also met and worked with the most amazing people across


a wide scope of the industry. I can’t think of anything else I could have chosen that would have been more rewarding.
