Total Residual Oxidant Analyser Designed for Low ppb Chlorine Concentration Measurements in Wastewater

Thermo Fisher Scientific has developed a new Total Residual Oxidant (TRO) analyser to address the needs of the wastewater industry, which calls for a robust, dependable instrument capable of reliably measuring low ppb chlorine concentrations in effluent and treated wastewater in line with stringent regulatory requirements.

Compared to the conventional DPD (N,N-Diethyl-1,4-Phenylenediamine Sulfate) colorimetric method, the iodometric electrode technology does not suffer from turbidity or colour interferences, which can have a negative impact on result accuracy and precision. Further, the Orion 7070iX Analyzer is capable of operating autonomously for long periods of time with minimal instrument drift (<5% for >180 days without calibration) eliminating the need for routine maintenance. At the same time, the system’s self-cleaning capability prevents chemical and biological fouling of the measurement cell and sensor, minimising downtime and facilitating continuous testing.

“The launch of the Orion 7070iX Analyzer is reflective of our mission to help our customers make the world healthier, cleaner and safer,” said Amit Agarwal, Vice President and General Manager for water and laboratory products at Thermo Fisher Scientific. “The superior sensitivity of the instrument allows users to have full control over their chlorination and dechlorination processes, while its compatibility with different water matrices, including seawater, industrial water and brackish Ballast water, makes it the system-of-choice across a wide variety of applications.”

To maximise efficiency and productivity, the Orion 7070iX Analyzer can operate automatically on-demand in intermittent on-off mode, based on sample flow: once the flow starts, the unit’s pumps turn on and they shut down as soon as the flow stops. The Orion 7070iX Analyzer also provides real-time monitoring of TRO fluctuations, alerting users within just 120 seconds from the change, prompting timely corrective action.

The Orion 7070iX TRO Analyzer is the most recent addition to a robust portfolio of process analysers that measure water contaminants including inorganic and disinfection by-products.

49346pr@reply-direct.com Service Providing Detailed Sample Analysis for Microplastics Announced

Socotec, a leading UK provider of testing, inspection and compliance services, is now providing microplastic analysis as a commercial service Socotec is one of the first UK laboratories to provide microplastic analysis as a commercial service. Developed in-house by Socotec’s specialist chemistry team, Socotec accurately isolates microplastics from all other content including: sand, glass, stone as well as other inorganic and organic particles. In addition, Socotec’s infrared equipment can identify the type of plastic which can be important in identifying sources.

Microplastics are defined as any fragment or particle of plastic less than 5mm in diameter, and can be classified as microfibers from synthetic clothing, microbeads from cosmetic items or fragments of plastic such as polyethylene, polypropylene and PET which can originate from varying sources.

The new service provision has supported The Canal & River Trust with microplastic analysis and sediment testing. The Trust has been undertaking a project to investigate the litter and plastic problem within the UK’s canals and rivers. In addition to gathering data on the amount and types of litter collected at various locations, Socotec has been providing microplastic analysis on sediment samples to analyse the extent of the problem.

Of the fifteen samples taken from canals and rivers, Socotec has discovered that 100% of samples contained microplastics. Socotec’s final report incorporated the total number and physical type of particles present. Samples came from a range of both industrial and rural site with microplastic contamination ranging from a few hundred particles per kg to hundreds of thousands. The information will support The Trust in their awareness campaigns; collecting and publicising data on the scale of the plastic problem in the UK waterways aims to urge communities and policy makers to help tackle this global problem.

With the focus on plastic pollution gathering more and more momentum, Socotec UK can support all projects wishing to obtain data on microplastics content within various sample matrices. 49426pr@reply-direct.com

Fundamental Checks of Water Quality in One Go

Trans Instruments is pleased to announce the addition of the new HM3070 AquaCombo meter, which simultaneously measures fundamental water parameters - namely pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Conductivity or Salinity, and Temperature.

The HM3070 AquaCombo meter is specially designed for full portability, simplicity and ease of use which meets general environmental measurements. With a pH range of 2 to 12pH at a resolution of 0.1, Conductivity of up to 69mS, salinity up to 42ppt, Dissolved Oxygen level up to 30ppm and temperature of 0 to 60°C, the meter is ideally suited to aquaculture monitoring, open or closed water systems, environmental water checks, wastewater control etc.

Calibration is made simple with 3 point buffer recognition calibration for pH, single point calibration at a preferred Conductivity range and in-air calibration for Dissolved Oxygen.

This meter is robust and rugged with a waterproof rating at IP67 for usage in hash weather conditions. A regular 1 meter cable probe for pH and conductivity and a 3 meter cable probe for DO will meet most measuring situations. The meter is able to store up to 99 data points in its memory. Now everyone, even site workers, can operate this simple to use AquaCombo meter.

Analysis of Mercury in Water, Wastewater, Sludges and Soils

As an alternative to traditional ICP and AFS/AAS systems for water, wastewater and sludge/soil analysis, a new Milestone dual beam mercury analyser from Analytix can measure to low ppt levels in 5 minutes. The sample preparation stage in mercury analysis often causes a problem particularly with sludges and soils due to its volatility. The Milestone mercury analyser does not require any sample preparation or additional reagents thus eliminating the risk of mercury loss and cross contamination.

The system does not require daily calibration and has the advantage of ‘running on air’ that removes the requirement for in-house or bottled gases. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/O4pk
