Chromatography 19 The Use of Gas Chromatography to Test for Traces of Explosives

Chromatography can be an extremely valuable tool in the detection of explosives. Following an explosion, it is crucial to a police investigation to identify if an explosive was used, and if so what type. Finding traces of explosives on a suspects clothing or belongings can link that suspect to a case. Once trace samples are collected, the amount of explosives in the sample can be on the low nanogram range.

TEA detectors, coupled with GC are widely used for the forensic analysis of trace explosives. Its simple operation, very high sensitivity and very high selectivity for nitroso compounds, makes the TEA a superior choice of detector for this application.

The Ellutia 800 series TEA is already being used in the world class Dubai Police science and criminology laboratory, and a detailed case study can be found on Ellutia’s website.

Robust YMC-Triart columns are the ideal choice for SFC. They are available from YMC with different selectivities (Diol, PFP, C18, Hybrid- Silica), particle sizes (1.9/3/5 µm) and dimensions. YMC-Triart columns cover the full range of applications from analytical to (semi)preparative scale. Full SFC compatibility and safety has been officially certified by the independent AFIN-TS institute (Analytisches Forschungsinstitut für Non-Target Screening GmbH). The well-known YMC reproducibility also comes with its renowned outstanding stability and reliability.

Powerful Tool for Continuous Polymer Analysis Announced

Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography (Py-GC) is a powerful characterisation tool for polymers including insoluble solids and composite materials. Py-GC is extensively used in a wide spectrum of application areas such as polymer chemistry, quality control, forensic science, environmental research, energy related technologies, geological science, and food chemistry. To increase the performance and flexibility of your Py-GC/MS system, JSB offers a broad range of innovative products around Frontier Laboratories analytical pyrolysers or µ-Reactors.

The Auto-Shot Sampler: AS-1020E has been developed to allow unattended analysis of multiple samples. This equipment provides significant cost savings by reducing operator workload and increasing efficiency.

The Multi-Shot Pyrolzer features: continuous operation for up to 48 samples; samples can be analysed by any of the four analytical methods (EGA, Single shot pyrolysis, double shot pyrolysis and heart-cutting); eliminates operator-related variation.

Assuming the average time to obtain a pyrogram is one hour, analysis of 48 samples can take up to a full week in the absence of an autosampler. The same results can be obtained in two days if the Auto-Shot sampler is used, whilst freeing up the operator to work on other tasks. Read more about the possibilities (link) of the Auto-Shot Sampler from Frontier or contact a JSB specialist. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/43qo

Isocratic Pump Achieves Nearly Pulse-free Flow Rates for Improved Efficiency

Gilson announces an expansion to its chromatography systems product offering with the introduction of the VERITY® 3011 Isocratic Pump. The new VERITY 3011 Pump broadens the depth of the VERITY purification systems portfolio with advancements over existing pumps including a convenient quick-connect pump head design and intuitive touchscreen control of the instrument. The pump enables reaction monitoring and easily integrates into both analytical and semi-preparative chromatography systems for environmental, food and beverage, and petroleum applications.

The VERITY 3011 Pump is a standalone pump with touchscreen control that delivers accurate and nearly pulse-free flow rates, improving overall efficiency and yield. The pump supports pressures up to 600 bar (8702 psi), which are some of the highest in the HPLC market, while the integrated pressure sensor protects system components from damage, decreasing downtime and operational costs.

The VERITY 3011 Pump heads rely on an innovative bayonet design that allows the pump heads to be easily changed without tools. Two pump heads available: the 5 SS for flow rates of 0.01–5 mL/minute and the 10 SS for 0.05–10 mL/minute. Both pump heads support pressures of up to 600 bar (8702 psi).

In a VERITY purification system, the VERITY 3011 pump and other system components are powered by TRILUTION® LC software. When used as a standalone pump, the intuitive touchscreen makes it easy to set up and run the pump in one of three modes: Flow, Dispense, or Program.

Gilson has a long history of advancing durable chromatographic system design and today specialises in preparative HPLC, flash chromatography, centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), with instrumentation that benefits discovery- to process-scale workflows. The introduction of the VERITY 3011 Isocratic Pump enhances the Gilson purification portfolio, which also includes columns, fraction collectors, detectors, and system control software.
