12 New Fluorescence Spectrometers Accurately Analyse a Broad Range of Sample Types
PerkinElmer, Inc have announced the launch of its FL 6500™ Pulse Xenon and FL 8500™ Continuous Wave Fluorescence Spectrometers. The instruments enable industrial companies, universities, government, contract and pharmaceutical laboratories to analyse a diverse range of sample types, to meet growing research or evolving compliance requirements. When used together, these create a comprehensive fluorescence spectrometer solution for research and commercial laboratories to handle a variety of application challenges.
The FL 8500 fluorescence spectrometer uses a high performance Xenon continuous wave excitation source with PerkinElmer optics for high sensitivity measurements, at scan speeds up to 60,000 nanometers. It can be configured for a range of applications, including material characterisation; industrial tracing and manufacturing R&D; agricultural and environmental analysis; along with analysis of LEDs, solar cells and organic electroluminescent materials.
The FL 6500 fluorescence spectrometer, which uses PerkinElmer optics and a Xenon pulse excitation source with variable power settings, is designed for testing samples that are susceptible to photo bleaching. Applications include: cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, enzymology and protein analysis, as well as thin coatings. Both instruments share the new Spectrum™ FL software that mirrors laboratory workflows for simple, streamlined method development and comprehensive data analysis in minutes. Optional interchangeable, plug- and-play accessories are auto-recognised by the software to further minimise downtime.
The intuitive software is also available in Enhanced Security (ES) to maintain Title 21 CFR Part 11 compliance and adhere to stringent data integrity requirements, preventing laboratories from incurring costly fines.
The new FL 6500 and FL 8500 systems include: improved signal to noise performance measurement for lower level analysis; better resolution to increase the number of spectral peaks that can be resolved; enhanced smart accessory interface for easy installation; fully-integrated thermal accessories to allow direct control of cuvettes for enhanced capability with molecular biology applications; PerkinElmer’s Radian™ proprietary instrument remote monitoring system.

New Spectrometer Delivers Fast, Accurate Analysis
The Ocean MZ5 from Ocean Optics is a compact, fully integrated ATR-MIR spectrometer that measures liquid samples from 1818-909 cm-1 (5.5-11 µm). Ocean MZ5 comprises a sample interface, light source, detector and software, and provides a fast, convenient alternative to traditional FTIR spectroscopy for lab research. Applications range from chemical discrimination and food and flavourings authentication, to biofuels analysis and environmental testing.
Ocean MZ5 is a self-contained system that does not require any external equipment such as light sources or fibres. Ocean Mirror, the dedicated software platform that comes with the system, is designed for measuring absorbance and transmittance of liquids placed on the instrument’s crystal surface. A rotating cover protects the crystal when not in use.
Ocean Optics has extensive applications and solutions development experience across the UV, Visible and NIR wavelength ranges. With Ocean MZ5, the company has partnered with Pyreos Ltd to expand its capabilities into new mid-IR solutions. The unique combination of Pyreos’ pyroelectric line arrays and Ocean Optics’ applied spectral knowledge opens up new application challenges involving samples with distinct mid-IR absorption characteristics. This includes detection of food adulterants and contaminants, determination of oil grade and quality, and analysis of alcohol purity.

Pellet Press Ideal for High-Quality Pellet Preparation Announced
The manual, hydraulic Pellet Press from Fritsch GmbH is ideal for the preparation of pellets with a smooth, homogeneous surface for spectral analyses such as X-ray fluorescence analysis or infrared spectroscopy for elementary analysis. It is suitable for the manufacturing of both solid and highly permeable pellets of solid samples, fast and easy.
The pressure force is variable up to maximum 250 kN and is automatically relieved in case of overstress. The clearly designed pressure force displays in 10 kN steps. Pressing tools for pellets with 12 mm, 32 mm, 15 mm and 40 mm diameter are available.
Operation is simple. Just fill in the sample, close the magnetically-held door and build-up the desired pressure using the hand lever. The compact yet robust instrument is easy to clean and comes with impact-resistant cladding.
For the comminution of the solid samples Fritsch recommend the Vibrating Cup Mill PULVERISETTE 9 which is ideal for extremely fast size-reduction of hard, brittle and fibrous materials down to analytical fineness. More information online:

ICP-MS Portfolio for Greater Customer Focus Announced
Analytik Jena continues to develop its PlasmaQuant MS series. In the future, customers will be able to configure every system in the ICP-MS series to suit their individual requirements. In addition to the PlasmaQuant MS and MS Elite models already available, two additional models are introduced. The PlasmaQuant MS Q is optimised for high-throughput applications, such as quality control for consumer goods, food inspection, or environmental monitoring. The second new model, the PlasmaQuant MS Elite S, was developed for routine analysis of ultratraces and offers an extremely high level of sensitivity. It is especially suitable for industries where analysis depends on the lowest detection limits and the highest recovery rates - such as applications in the semiconductor industry, quality control for high-purity chemicals, or in geochemistry and geochronology.
“With the new ICP models, the MS Q and MS Elite S, which have been specifically optimised for customer requirements in our seven key industries, we are consistently expanding the range of applications of the ICP-MS technology. Whether for high-throughput, routine, or research applications, the technological advantages of the PlasmaQuant MS series in combination with the new application-optimised upgrade options make it possible to achieve optimal, tailor-made solutions for our customers,” explained Dr Marc Diener, Director of Product Management and Application at Analytik Jena, the expanded range of applications of the PlasmaQuant MS product series.
With the two new ICP-MS models, the company aims to serve users who require a particularly high degree of performance flexibility in their ICP-MS applications. Customers receive virtually unlimited freedom of application. Depending on the matrix load of the samples and the individual performance requirements for sensitivity and throughput, analysis of more than 80 samples per hour is possible. The continued development of the ICP-MS portfolio serves to optimise the ICP-MS technology from Analytik Jena for special and routine applications in the company’s seven key industries: pharmaceutical, chemical, oil and gas, food, environment, energy, and geology and mining.
Analytik Jena additionally offers a wide range of upgrade options to tailor all systems in the PlasmaQuant MS series for the requirements of their respective fields of application.
