Mass Spectrometry & Spectroscopy 9 Superior Sampling Capability with the Quest ATR Crystal Puck System
The Specac Quest is a single reflection high performance ATR accessory designed for use in the mid and far IR. The Quest features an all-reflective gold coated optical design based on our proprietary Synopti- Focal array technology.
The greatest strength of the Specac Quest is the easily interchangeable puck system. When required the operator can quickly change between them choosing the puck best suited to the material under investigation. Four standard pucks are available with diamond, ZnSe, Ge and Si crystal options: As standard the diamond puck is coated with an anti-reflective coating to maximise the throughput for increased signal to noise performance, although this coating limits the range to 7800 to 400 cm-1 matching the range of most mid-IR spectrometers. When interrogation of the near or far IR is required an extended range diamond puck is also available which has a range of 10000 to 40 cm--1
diamond puck is supplied as a monolithic crystal which offers superior robust performance compared to competitor laminated diamond wafers on a support material that can delaminate with use and depending on the choice of support restricts the spectroscopic range available. Monolithic diamonds are also particularly resilient to point loads.
ZnSe provides an attractive – and cheap – alternative to diamond when information from the diamond phonon region (2000 to 2500 cm--1
prevent damage to the crystal. If the refractive index of a material approaches that of the ATR crystal (2.4 at 2000 cm-1
Between diamond/ZnSe and Ge, Si has a refractive index of 3.4 at 2000 cm-1 ) is required. However, the use of ZnSe is limited to soft materials to for diamond and ZnSe) then the crystal will transmit instead of reflecting the light and no spectroscopic information will
be returned. Additionally, for strongly absorbing materials, such as carbon black, exhibit band distortion caused by anomalous dispersion which results in serious spectral issues. For these types of materials, Specac offer a Ge puck that has a lower penetration depth, reducing the intensity of spectral peaks, due to its higher refractive index (4 at 2000 cm-1
). offering the ability to reduce band distortion whilst limiting reduced band intensity.
Although the standard puck works with both solids and liquids, Specac also offer a specially designed liquid puck with ZnSe and diamond crystal options for superior ease of use with liquid samples. If required, the liquid puck can be used with small solid samples such as powders. For volatile liquids a cover is provided, which fits both the standard and liquid puck. Rounding off our offering we also produce a specular reflectance puck to enable the study of reflective materials at a nominal angle of 45°. A heated diamond puck option is also currently under development to further enhance the Quest family.
