New Electrochemical Additions to
Sensor Range Offer Affordable Options for Commercial Gas Sensing
SGX Sensortech (UK) are pleased to announce the launch of eight new sensors to complement their range of industrial and commercial gas sensing products. The new products allow instrument manufacturers a greater choice when selecting sensors for carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide and oxygen and are available in two industry standard packages; 20mm and 32mm diameter. In addition, SGX are proud to include an innovative combined carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide sensor in the same package which provides industry compliant performance in a single miniature housing, saving valuable space in portable instrument designs.
Tony Trocian, International Sales Manager for SGX; “These new products emphasise our commitment to providing choice for our OEM customers and is a further step towards our ultimate goal of becoming the number one option for gas sensors. In many of our markets, the key focus is on gas detector cost of ownership - with proven performance and affordable cost, the new SGX electrochemical sensors go a long way to helping deliver that.”

The LMP91000A, from Alphasense (UK), is a programmable Analogue Front End (AFE) for use in micro power chemical sensing applications. It is intended to be used within the sensor, creating a “smart sensor”. The AFE is designed for three-electrode single gas sensors and for two terminals oxygen sensor. This device provides all of the functionality for detecting changes in gas concentration based on a delta current at the working electrode.
The AFE generates an output voltage proportional to the cell current. Trans- impedance gain is user programmable through an I2C compatible interface from 3.4kOhm to 440kOhm making easy to convert current ranges from 5µA to 650uA full scale. Optimised for micro-power applications, the AFE works over a voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5 V. The cell voltage is user selectable using the on board programmability.
A temperature sensor is embedded and it can be power cycled through the interface. The output of this temperature sensor can be read by the user through the ‘Out’ pin. Together with the coefficients stored in the on board EEPROM, this information can be used to compensate for the sensor sensitivity drift over temperature. Additionally user controlled sensor test will be implemented. This function tests the sensor for proper connection (all 3 terminals) and proper function.
Depending on configuration, total current consumption for the device can be less than 10µA running. For power savings trans-impedance amplifier (TIA) can be turned off and instead a load impedance equivalent to the TIA’s inputs impedance is switched in.
A Technical Data Sheet can be downloaded from the new Alphasense web site.

Digital Humidity/Temperature Sensor with I²C Output

The new digital sensor HTU21D, from Amsys (Germany), is a fully self contained capacitive humidity sensor combined with a bandgap temperature sensor. Every product is individually calibrated, compensated and finally tested. The HTU21D sensors are dedicated humidity and temperature plug and play sensors for OEM applications where reliable and accurate measurements are needed. HTU21D sensors are characterised by a 0 – 100% RH-range and by an extended temperature range. The humidity and temperature digital outputs are in an I²C format and suitable for all micro-controllers. The resolution of HTU21D sensor can be changed by command (8/12bit up to 12/14bit for RH/T), whereby the measurement time and the current consumption can be modified. With the very low power consumption the sensors are dedicated for battery powered applications. Furthermore, low battery can be detected and a checksum improves communication reliability.

Humidity and temperature response time as well as the recovering time (from condensing humidity) are in the range of a few seconds. Lot identification is printed on the sensor and an electronic identification code is stored on the chip – which can be read out by command. Embedded in a reflow solderable Dual Flat No leads (DFN) package of 3 x 3mm foot print with 0.9mm height the combined humidity and temperature sensor is designed for high volume and cost sensitive applications with tight space constraints. With new improvements and the miniaturisation of the sensor the performance-to-price ratio is even better.
Optional PTFE filter/membrane (F) protects the HTU21D against dust, water immersion as well as against contamination by particles.

The BCP-CO2 is a CO2 analyser for bioprocesses,
from BlueSens GmbH (Germany). It is the ideal sensor for implementation in fermenters and bioreactors, is easy to install and can be connected to any process line system without difficulties thanks to the standardised data interfaces. It can be used from the pilot scale to the production scale. With this sensor you can understand your bioprocess in real-time. The BCP-CO2 is particularly suited for use in parallel bioreactors. For example, it helps to optimise the operation of bio-processing online. The compact sensors of the range BCP-CO2 can be integrated without any problems directly in the gas line. The low-maintenance sensor excels with its very low operating costs. You can connect the sensor directly to a shake flask or to a fermenter. The CO2
content can be determined directly and
locally, no matter what the throughput volume is. The time required for tests in the laboratory is reduced. Additional gas coolers, pumps or valves for gas measurement are not required. The BCP- CO2 can be connected to any process line system without difficulties thanks to the standardised data interfaces. In connection with optional software you can use the BCP-CO2 sensor to determine the CER rate of your process.
