xiv UK Focus - Air Monitoring Trace Level Detection of Selected VOCs in Air

As a high speed, portable GC-MS, the new Tridion-9 from Quantitech has been developed for a wide variety of applications including the onsite analysis of trace levels of volatile organic compounds. Quantitech’s Dr Andrew Hobson says: “The ability to conduct trace level analysis in the field is a major advantage because it avoids the problems and costs associated with the collection and transport of gaseous samples for laboratory analysis.

“Typical applications for this technology include occupational safety, environmental monitoring, process monitoring and research.”

SPME (Solid Phase Micro Extraction) provides a simple, low cost methodology to collect and introduce multiple samples to an analytical instrument.

To highlight the detection capabilities of the Tridion-9 and SPME for a number of analytes at approximately 1 part per billion (ppb) v/v in air, a 10 litre Tedlar bag was spiked with a mixture of VOCs and then a dilution was made to generate a known vapour concentration for the analytes. Concentrations were corrected for atmospheric pressure and temperature using US EPA method 10- 2.4. The analytes were extracted from the gas phase at ambient temperature for 60 min using a Custodion SPME syringe with a 65µm polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) fibre. Following sample extraction, the SPME syringe was inserted into the TRIDION-9 injection port for analysis.

The data from this experiment showed trace levels of contaminants that are common in sample bags; N,N-Dimethylacetamide and Phenol. However, the target compounds were automatically identified by deconvolution software in the presence of these large interfering compounds. Peaks that

Quality Bags Make Sampling a Breeze

They produced their first sample bags in the 1970’s, and ever since SKC has been leading the way in new and innovative sampling bag technologies. The original sample bags were made from Tedlar film which soon became the industry standard for Volatile Organic Compounds.

Over the last four decades SKC sample bags have been the number one choice of occupational hygiene and environmental professionals and have been used for a huge variety of occupational and environmental sampling applications, including industrial VOCs, stack and vent gases, bio- and landfill gas, waste leaching using the TCLP method, soil gas sampling, and fenceline monitoring.

To meet the demands of our ever changing industry new materials have been developed and SKC now have available a wide range of ultra-clean, high performance materials. These include SamplePro, FlexFilm, Fluorofilm FEP, and the robust multi-layered FlexFoil and FlexFoil PLUS, which is ideal for low levels of VOCs and excellent for sulphur compounds, as well as the classic Tedlar.

All their sample bags provide superior sample storage stability and durability with seams that are evenly sealed and leak-tested, to ensure total sample integrity.

SKC sample bags come in a wide range of standard sizes, from 0.5 to 100 litres, with a choice of quality single combined hose/valve fittings in stainless steel, polypropylene or PTFE, and a dual stainless steel fitting for certain bag materials. For specialist applications, they can supply custom- made bags in your preferred size, material and fitting – simply contact SKC’s Technical Sales team to discuss your requirements.

Need a pump suitable for bag sampling? SKC will be happy to help you find a pump that suits your needs. To eliminate pump contamination they also offer vacuum chambers in a range of sizes to enable fast sample collection without the risk of exposing your sample pump to contaminant gases.

This simple experiment demonstrates that the Custodion SPME syringe and Tridion-9 GC-TMS are uniquely suited for rapid onsite analysis.

SST Sensing Ltd are pleased to announce the launch of a new Environmental Monitoring System called the AQ-Alert+. It is the solution to monitor and control air quality in any building. The affordable AQ-Alert+ System was designed on the basis of customer demand for a product that could not be found anywhere else on the market place. The AQ-Alert+ measures the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air with options to also measure oxygen concentration, temperature, atmospheric pressure and relative humidity at a very competitive cost.

As well as offering standard versions of the AQ-Alert+, which suit most customers’ application requirements, the AQ-Alert+ is completely configurable, meaning that you can customise the system to exactly meet your specific application needs. Any combination of output is available and the traffic light LED indicators can be set to illuminate at your chosen CO2

levels. The compact and

maintenance free design assures long term stability in any ambient environment.
