22 Air Monitoring - CEM 2014 Preview World-first Accreditation Enables Leap Forward in Environmental Testing
Linde Gas (Germany) has been recently awarded ISO17025 accreditation for its specialty gases mixtures used for environmental testing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While many liquid VOC standards have been previously certified, this is the first time any industrial gases company has achieved such validation for VOC mixtures in a gaseous state, and in so doing Linde has enabled a significant leap forward in legal metrology.
VOCs are insidious and highly noxious chemicals that exist within the ambient air – both in the outdoor environment and within buildings. Many are carcinogenic in nature and are directly attributable to serious human health problems, including diseases of the respiratory tract, even when exposure is limited to very low levels.
With ever increasing environmental testing around the world, a growing number of federal and state agencies require that the environmental sample they are testing can be accurately and assuredly compared to a guaranteed, “known” sample. Through years of technical innovation and advanced analytical and blending methods Linde has become the first to develop traceability procedures to prove 1ppm of benzene – or indeed any other VOC - and guarantee a previously unattained level of precision.

Anaheim Scientific (USA) today introduced the third model in its M-Series of mini-handheld environmental meters: The M130 – Mini Anemometer.
The M-Series are small handheld meters that make taking measurements out in the field easy and convenient.
The M130 - Wind Speed: Up to 55 mph (90 km/h), Units: Speed in m/s, km/h, mph, knots, or ft/min, Response: Light air response 0.4 m/s.
Other M-Series meters coming soon: The M110 --Mini Light Meter (already released), The M120 – Mini Temperature/Humidity Meter (already released), The M140 – Mini Solar Power Meter and The M150 – Mini UV-AB Meter.
The M-Series meters have the following features in common: Large 3¾ digit display, Small 5.3 x 1.9 x 0.2 inch size weighing only 2.8 oz (80 grams), Data hold, Maximum/Average/Minimum Hold, Zero adjustment, Low battery indicator, , Auto power off and disable function, Light weight (less than 9 oz.), Powered by 2 x AAA batteries and a Limited two-year warranty.

The best way to protect against explosions is to avoid flammable gases or fumes. This is an impossible task, especially in cases where solvents are used in paint shops, coating lines and exhaust air decontamination systems, or indeed during coil coating. This involves a continuous process whereby metal coils are coated with several layers of paint and then dried in a continuous oven. This process creates solvent-containing gas mixtures, the concentration of which must be analysed to prevent them from becoming dangerous. The % LEL value of the exhaust air is measured at different points in the system. FID technology is the preferred method for taking these measurements. Due to its high availability, even in the case of complex mixtures, and its safe functioning, the EuroFID3010 Inline by SICK (Germany) is ideal for taking these measurements, and forms an important link in the system’s safety chain. In addition, the EuroFID3010 is currently the only FID gas warning device which fulfills the requirements of the EN 50271 standard.

The analyser is connected to the system via a flange. The sample probe is therefore located directly in the process area. Its tried-and-tested flame ionisation detector allows the organic components of the gas sample to be continually fed transformed into a hydrogen flame. During this chemical and physical process, ionisation of the molecules takes place, resulting in the creation of an electrical current. This signal is proportional to the hydrocarbon concentration, and is analysed electronically.
The EuroFID3010 continually takes measurements without moving parts. An ejector pump is used for sampling instead of a mechanical pump. Wear and mechanical failures are therefore not an issue. This leads to lower maintenance costs. All of the device components which carry gas, right up to the analysis chamber, are continuously heated in order to prevent condensation forming inside the analyser unit. Rapid sampling via the ejector pump and the measurement principle itself ensure a short response time (T90), meaning that changes in the process can be quickly recognised and responded to.

The rugged measuring device offers various options. These include industrial casing for Ex and non-Ex-applications, a process gas barrier and flexible positioning of the control unit, which can be located up to 500 m away from the analyser unit.
