Industrial Leaders to Present their Water Stewardship Journey
From 6 to 8 May 2014, the fifth edition of Aquatech India will be held in Pragati Maidan – New Delhi. This combined exhibition and conference is a joint venture between Amsterdam RAI and Inter Ads Exhibitions (India). The event focuses on drinking water, process water and waste water. At this edition of the show the Industrial Leaders Forum (ILF) in India will be launched as part of the Aquatech India conference.
The three day conference focuses on creating an enabling environment to improve water services delivery for domestic, industrial and irrigations usage. It presents excellent opportunities to exchange industry views and discuss best practices in the water industry with fellow professionals. The conference will be held on the same venue ground as the trade exhibition.
This year the chairman’s address will be given by Mr. D B Panse, Chairman – Advisory Council, Aquatech India 2014. Amongst the speakers are Prof. Dinesh Mehta, Professor Emeritus, CEPT University, Mr. Emani Kumar, Executive Director ICLEI, India, Dr. Aman Sharma, General Secretary, Indian Water Partnership & General Manager – Environment, WAPCOS Ltd., India and Dr. S.K. Jain, Managing Director, Ground Water & Mineral Investigation Consultancy Centre Pvt. Ltd., India
Captains of Industry from leading companies including Coca-Cola and Akzo Nobel and PwC converged at the Industrial Leaders Forum at Aquatech Amsterdam in November 2013. Marking a decade of progress of the global corporate sustainability movement, the forum presented practical solutions to resolve the ever challenging water demands around the world. The story now continues in India, at the Industrial Leaders Forum India.
On 7 May, high level managers from Tata Capital Cleantech, Mahindra & Mahindra and Jain Irrigation Systems will present their water stewardship journey. This is followed by an interactive panel discussion for industrial leaders and water companies to discuss innovative solutions for water transformation and to develop a roadmap for necessary advances in water transformation to respond to future sustainability challenges. Amongst the panel members are Suresh Babu S V, Director River Basins & Water Policy, WWF-India and Anirban Ghosh, Vice President, Auto and Farm Sector - Sustainability, CSR & Ethics, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. IFC is supporting ILF as a thought partner, and will be moderating the ILF panel.

New Sludge Interface Helped Generate Extra Electricity for Severn Trent
Pulsar Process Measurement (UK) have supplied eight Sludge Finder 2 sludge interface monitors to Severn Trent’s Stoke Bardolph site as part of a process improvement project that has allowed the company to significantly increase electricity generation on site and return energy to the National Grid.
In common with many large sewage treatment works, Stoke Bardolph uses the gas produced in the digesters to drive turbines, generating electricity. The more gas produced, the more electricity can be generated, and an important determinant of gas volume is the quality and density of the sludge being delivered to the digesters.
Stoke Bardolph wanted to increase sludge density from an average of around 2% up to a target of 6%. The project included a move to positive displacement pumps and installation of sludge density monitors. It was also important to reliably and consistently measure the sludge blanket level to optimise the pump operation, making sure that the maximum amount of sludge of the right density is efficiently transferred to the digesters.
Before the Pulsar units were installed, sludge blanket measurement was made using a dip tube. The measurement needed to be made every day, which involved climbing onto the rotating bridge of the clarifier and operating a metres-long dip tube. This had to be done every day, a potentially hazardous operation and not the dynamic measurement required to make the process work efficiently. In addition, the dip tubes tended to crack in cold weather.
Pulsar’s Sludge Finder 2 features a self-cleaning ultrasonic transducer, continuously measuring sludge blanket level. The instrument signal is taken off the rotating bridge through the slip rings and the signal is fed back to the site SCADA system, where it appears on plant mimics and is used by the system to determine the optimum time that the pumps are in operation.
The scheme has been a resounding success. Stoke Bardolph generates 5.5MW (5500KW) at full power. Enough energy is produced, not only to power equipment on site, but also to return a net surplus of electricity to the Grid; making the site energy self-sufficient.
