The biggest fundraiser of the year for DARE - Dachshund Adoption, Rescue & Education, was held on November 2 at the Sun-N-Fun Pavillion in Lakeland. The costumed dogs lived up to this year’s theme, which was PAWTY GRAS. And, what would a meet-up of Dachshunds and Doxie Lovers be without the Wiener Races? This year’s winners won the biggest trophies we’ve ever seen. The DARE organizers and their volunteers did a spectacular job. Photography by Heather Schulman.

The fifth year for the Thanksgiving Day run was a record-breaker. The dog-friendly run sold out the 150 dog slots allocated for the race, and there were more than 4,000 runners and walkers. Nearly $80,000 was raised to support LIVESTRONG at the Tampa Y for cancer survivors and their families. New this year, race participants were encouraged to wear the name of someone impacted by cancer. “It makes a difference when you’re wearing that name. That person is not forgotten,” said Richard Gonzmart. “It inspires us to know that together, we’re going to make a difference in the fight against cancer.” Gonzmart is the 4th generation owner of Columbia Restaurant Group and owner of Goody Goody Famous Burgers, the race’s annual sponsor. Racers were treated to a hot breakfast from Goody Goody after the race.
