During World War II, Bill Jackson, a native of Atlanta and a builder at heart, was stationed at MacDill

Air Force Base in Tampa. He spent a total of five years in the army, then two years in England with the Eighth Air Force before returning to Florida. One night, at a Big Band party on base, he met the lovely Harriet Rogers and cut in for a dance. Mrs. Jackson would later say that, at that moment, she knew she would marry him, even though he was, in her words, “the worst dancer.” Bill Jackson’s opened in 1951

as an army surplus store. By 1952, the store had grown to include fish- ing tackle, camping gear and scuba diving equipment. Darry remembers his mother putting him and his brother Doug on display in the store’s windows with sleeping bags to amuse the customers. Mr. Jackson began teaching scuba diving and that’s when the

“teaching what he sold” philosophy really took hold. Today, the store is one of the oldest dive shops in the country. Darry’s parents, Bill and Harriet,

passed within weeks of each other in 2014. Their presence is still felt at the store, and their passion contin- ues to serve as a reminder that life is challenging, surprising and fun. But mostly, it's an adventure. Bill Jackson’s Shop For
