OUR TOP DOG TRAINERS.

“They told me that Christie had been playing in the yard with the other dogs-in-training when she tore her ACL on her right leg and would need surgery,” said Kerry. “They asked me if we would take her during her rehab, which would be about 8 to 12 weeks. Of course, we said yes.” It was a tough 12 weeks for Christie as she was

restricted mainly to her crate. But, she recovered well. However, when the medical staff at SEGD assessed Christie, they felt she wasn’t guide dog material. There was a possibil- ity that the ACL in her other leg could eventually tear. With that, they offered Christie as a pet to the Krisemans. “It was bittersweet, but we are so glad to have her,” said Kerry. Jake was the 10th puppy the couple raised for SEGD,

during which time the Krisemans noticed his hind legs would kind of spread a bit during a stance. It was also difficult for him to go from a sit to a down position. They took Jake first to a neurologist who felt it was an orthopedic issue. The orthopedist determined that it appeared to be neurological, and an MRI confirmed that Jake had porencephaly, a neurological disorder. SEGD again offered Jake to the Krisemans as a pet. “He’s a smart dog and based on where the disorder is, he

hasn’t suffered from any seizures,” said Kerry. “He is a great spunky family dog; a lot of fun and affectionate with Christie. He’s just a love.” The Krisemans have put their puppy raising volunteer

efforts on hold for now. Kerry recently shared with family and friends on her social media page that she has cancer. It is her hope that by sharing her journey she will help inspire and empower others who are battling an illness. Comparing running a campaign to that of running a

marathon, Kerry wrote, “I’ve supported Rick through eight political campaigns. He was the candidate, but I’ve endured the marathons right by his side, as his wife, friend and advisor. Now, it’s my turn to run my own type of marathon, and his turn to be at my side.” To which Mayor Kriseman replied, “I am incredibly

proud of Kerry, and will be by her side for every step of this personal journey while continuing to lead our city forward.”
