The pet will be adjusted and go home to rest the
remainder of the day. There may be soreness the following day and it may take up to 72 hours to see any changes. Manipulation, adjustment, mobilization, realignments.
Lots of terms are used with the goal being to get normal motion back to the joint and balanced movement. Most go home with work to do, perhaps rehab work if they have had a recent surgery or intervertebral disc problem or stretches and strengthening activities. Acute injuries may be treated every three days and
chronic ailments, weekly to monthly, depending on the response of the animal. Most show significant improvement in one to four treatments. Many top show handlers use animal chiropractors to
improve the top line of their dogs as well as their gait in the show ring. In canine agility, problems going down the dog walk and A frame, or jumping off prematurely may indicate a neck subluxation. Problems going up or refusals may point to a pelvic or lower back misalignment. Discomfort from spinal subluxations may cause a dog to “pop out” of the weave poles before completing them. Dogs participat- ing in dock diving competition can develop subluxations of their ribs, sternum and lower back. In all of these examples, the animals may seem sound at normal gaits but not be able to perform at their expected level of competition. Does pet insurance cover chiropractic? Yes, some
pet insurance companies actually do cover animal chiro- practic, massage, acupuncture and some other alternative treatments. While our focus has been on dogs, chiropractic can be done on any creature with a spine. Its use is common in horses, especially racehorses and performance animals. At the Animal Chiropractic Education school in Texas, they even have students adjust livestock on their farm! As a veterinarian, it’s wonderful to have a therapy that
may reduce pain in our pets, improve nervous system function and often reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals needed to help our furry friends.
