Through ski trips arranged by
Darry, members of the ski club that Chuck and Debbie belong to have trav- eled all over the world. That means Debbie’s service dogs have traveled with them including to places like Italy and France. Telluride remains their favorite. Dogs aren’t allowed on the slopes
and they can’t be left alone in the hotel rooms. Most of the ski lodges have accommodations for the guide dogs while their charges are on the slopes. “There has never been a shortage of people at the ski lodges who want to babysit my dogs,” said Debbie. On several occasions, the resorts have even given honorary ski passes to Debbie’s guide dog. Of course, traveling requires a lot of
planning and flexibility to allow for changes in the itinerary. It’s always good to pack a good sense of humor, which Debbie, Chuck and Darry have plenty of. They shared several funny stories from their experiences, including that first ski trip in Aspen. On one occasion, Debbie was
getting a little practice in on the bunny slope, holding onto the surface lift – a constantly-moving rope that pulls skiers up the slope as they stand on their skis. Once at the top of the bunny slope, the skier is to let go of the rope. But, Debbie wasn’t sure she was at the top of the slope and didn’t let go when she was supposed to. A frustrated lift attendant asked Chuck why Debbie didn’t let go. “What, is she blind or something?” said the attendant. “Yes,” answered Chuck. That’s all he needed to say as he and Debbie skied away, laughing. As the three friends recollected

their travels and experiences developed over the last 25 years, Darry commented, “It’s been a pleasure to work with Debbie and Chuck. I’ve learned so much from them. Debbie is such an inspiration. When we talk, I can feel her confidence. I have just plain had fun with them over the years.” The fifth puppy that Chuck and
