Committee makes visit to new hospital

Members of the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce’s (ABCC) executive committee were able to get a glimpse of the building work taking place at the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital. Dal Darroch, Neelam Afzal, Ambreen Khan,

Fajli Bibi and Amina Hussain, alongside ABCC and Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) relationship manager Charles Brant, donned their hard hats and steel toe cap boots to visit the construction site in Sandwell. The Department of Health and Social Care has

agreed to fund the £350m completion works of the hospital, and construction firm Balfour Beatty will finish the building. Once open, the hospital will have 669 beds

and 13 operating theatre suites, as well as modern diagnostic equipment. It is expected the hospital will have capacity

for approximately 81,455 inpatients and 115,045 outpatients every year. Johnny Shah, head of Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital Trust charity, said: “It was our pleasure to show members of the ABCC

Hospital visitors (rear from left): Dal Darroch and Charles Brant; and (front) Amina Hussain, Neelam Afzal, Fajli Bibi, and Ambreen Khan

around the Midland Metropolitan Hospital. Like all guests, they left with a clear understanding that this hospital will help us deliver first-class health care. But they also understood that we

are building a place that will be more than a hospital. “We need the business community to get

involved in our fundraising campaign. Let’s be clear the cost of the build and the equipment is covered. But we need to fundraise for things that are not covered by our NHS funding, such as play areas for children or overnight rooms for parents. “If you want to find out how your business can

get involved then please get in touch by emailing me on johnny.shah@nhs.net. Only by working together can we make the Midland Metropolitan more than a hospital.” Charles Brrant said: “It’s fantastic to see the

continued progress on such an important infrastructure project as well as the passion and commitment of those helping to make sure it’s a success. The hospital will provide world-class care and lead on research and development for the benefit of future generations. “But it’s important that local businesses

support the project, so if you feel you can help please do contact Johnny and the team.”
