When is a project really ‘done’?

By Sally Palethorpe, managing partner of Inspired Partners

Helping people to navigate their way through a change project is very rewarding, using appropriate tools and techniques to help the process. However, this isn’t always

enough. Being clear on what primary outcomes the project needs to achieve makes all the difference yet is often overlooked. Consider, as an example, the

introduction of new software. Is the required outcome to get the software loaded and running bug free and people trained to use it? Or, is it that the software

provides better functionality and increases productivity? The second outcome is the

main one required by the business which is often lost along the way; we implement the software, do some training and then ‘hope’ that everyone sees the benefits and works differently. However, this approach does not factor in the vagaries of human behaviours. In order to embed new

ways of working in the business, realise all the potential benefits and ensure that the changes are sustainable the project activities need to be designed to deliver the desired outcome(s). This may initially take more

time but a project is only ‘done’ when the primary outcome is achieved.
