Partnership targets youth mental health in the city


A partnership aimed at taking action on bullying and improving the mental health of children in Birmingham has been launched. University of Birmingham, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and HSBC have joined forces to investigate the scale of bullying in schools across the city. The Chamber patrons are also


piloting an internationally- recognised intervention programme that reduces bullying and preventing the onset of mental ill health.

It is estimated that currently


three children in every classroom across Birmingham have a diagnosable mental health condition. Data shows that over 50 per cent


of all mental health concerns start before the age of 14-years-old and that children who were bullied at 13 are twice as likely to develop depression by the age of 18. Researchers from the university


and the hospital are to trial the KiVa programme – a scheme that equips children and young people with the tools to support each other, shifting the focus away from

Corporate Sustainability at HSBC UK, said: “While there are no official local statistics of the number of children in Birmingham who experience bullying, indicators suggest it is a significant problem. “We are proud to be supporting


this important initiative to tackle bullying and improve mental health in Birmingham.” Sarah-Jane Marsh, chief


executive of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This partnership is a chance to change the life-story of thousands of children and young people in Birmingham and beyond and I could not be more excited about the potential opportunities and learnings ahead.” Professor Tim Jones, provost and


vice-principal at the University of Birmingham, added: “Together, we hope to reduce the impact of bullying in local schools and contribute to better mental health for young people and their long- term outcomes across Birmingham and beyond.”

Employers earn Ministry of Defence awards


Fifteen employers from the West Midlands have received their Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Awards from West Midland Reserve Forces & Cadets Association. The ERS was launched in 2014 to


recognise employer support for the wider principles of the Armed Forces Covenant. The scheme encompasses


bronze, silver and gold awards for the employers that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to defence and the Armed Forces community. This includes the Reserves,


service leavers, Armed Forces veterans, the wounded, injured and sick, Cadets, military spouses or partners and their families. The winners for 2019 were City of Wolverhampton College, Global


Radiodata Communications Ltd, Halfords Limited, Keele University, Kinetic Six Ltd, Kopek Security Ltd, Level Peaks Associates, New Model in Technology & Engineering, Police Credit Union Ltd, Q3 Academies Trust, Spectra Group Limited, The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, Tile Cross Academy, Ubi-Tech Limited and Waymarker Financial. A ceremony took place at the


National Memorial Arboretum and was hosted by BBC Midlands Today’s Michael Collie. Philip Sinclair, a West Midland


RFCA regional employer engagement director, said: “Our class of 2019 have been particularly strong, with all displaying a strong commitment to show their support, and demonstrate it by employing members of the Armed Forces community within their workforce.”
