WHERRY YACHT CHARTER CHARITABLE TRUST UPDATE The Wherry Yacht Charter sailing season finishes at the end of September. We do however have a special charter out on October 1st
, so there’s just a chance you may still see two wherry yachts sailing
together between Wroxham and Salhouse Broad. Give us a wave if you do!
Although the sailing is over until next May, the work to keep our historic fleet maintained in good condition continues throughout the winter months. First job, as soon as Hathor returns to Wroxham from her summer at How Hill, will be to repair her cabin roof. We’ve had to remove one seat cushion from Hathor’s saloon for much of the season due to an ongoing leak above it every time it rains. We now need to investigate and stop this water getting in before any more damage is done.
Each winter either Hathor or one of our three wherry yachts has to be taken out onto our slipway for maintenance. It’s Norada’s turn this winter, with all the other wherries getting an in-water check and whatever work is necessary done to them. If you would like to help with the hull scrapping, painting, varnishing or other maintenance tasks, please get in touch via

Throughout the summer some of our sailing routes have proved more popular than others. Many people choose the longer distances, but shorter routes can be as good, if not better, because we always aim to sail for the whole day.
One recent trip was advertised as simply Barton Turf to How Hill. However, after setting off from Barton Turf at 10am, we sailed up the River Ant and east into Sutton Broad. We sailed all the way through this long, thin broad before dropping the sail and turning round near Sutton Staithe. After sailing back through the broad we turned north on the River Ant, passing Hunsett Mill and continuing to within sight of Wayford Bridge.
After turning again and a brief stop for our picnic lunches, we sailed back down the river, across Barton Broad and finally down the lower part of the River Ant to How Hill. With the sun shining and a favourable breeze it was one of my most enjoyable days crewing on a wherry and it didn’t end until we moored at 5.15pm.
We have just started planning our 2020 sailing season and our WYC Friends will get news of the days and routes a month before they go public early next year. If you are interested in sailing with us for a day out, special occasion or family get-together, why not join the Friends yourself for just £15 to get early news of sailings and other membership benefits. Gift membership is also available – think Christmas!
