CLUB NEWS

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER October can be a very colourful month with all the different trees we have around us. It’s only when the leaves fall that we have the task of clearing them all up. Unfortunately, we do lose our evenings, which give us less time to do our outside jobs. Before the frosts come, we need to move any containers which have tender plants into a sheltered spot, or protect them with fleece, or bring them into the greenhouse. Start to tidy borders, lift any remaining summer bedding. Dig over, add organic matter and tidy up permanent plants, before planting wallflowers, pansies etc. Also, plant your daffs, tulips and crocuses. Prune and shape up your shrubs which have finished flowering and, like buddleia davidii, take down by at least a third. Your lawns, hopefully, will have regained their colour by now. Keep trimming them but not so short. If you like a nice lawn, scarify two or three ways and clear all the debris up. If necessary, spike to improve drainage and let air in, then over seed to thicken the sward. In the veg area, harvest main crop potatoes, beetroot, carrots and other veg. Take down runner and climbing French beans and save any seed, then chop up the plants and add to the compost heap. Pick apples and pears when they are ready and store carefully. Tidy up plants in the pond area. If you have nearby trees cover your pond with netting to protect from the leaf fall. Plants that are at the best at the moment include autumn crocus, a lot of the flowering cherries and acers with their coloured leaves plus nerine bowderii with their striking pink flowers. Enjoy the autumn in your garden.
