NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL Message from County & District Councillor Nigel Dixon

Brexit - Over 3 years after the referendum I never thought I would have cause to write this article but several very concerned people have asked me what will happen. The truth is I don’t know; what I do know is that this debacle is causing untold harm and a democratic decision has to be made and implemented asap. It now seems that action will come via a General Election. Democracy relies on the wishes of the minority giving way to the will of the majority; it also relies on Parliament accepting and delivering on the will of the people. Currently, neither of those crucial actions are actually happening. Hence a General Election seems to be the only way forward but unlike those of the past this one will focus on the leave or remain choice; all the usual considerations will be eclipsed by that single issue. Whatever your view, this has virtually paralysed Parliament and Government and it has to be resolved quickly so that the much neglected normal business of Government can be progressed. While the District and County Councils have contingency plans ready, they are so generic (because they don’t know what they will be presented with), but it’s questionable whether they will be accurate or adequate. However, it’s as good as you can get in the circumstances.

To conclude, we are dependent on democracy and Parliament delivering quickly on the will of the majority of whatever size and whether it be in or out.

Car Parking at Hoveton & Wroxham Railway Station - Greater Anglia, who run the Bittern Line Trains and Stations, recently introduced car parking charges without any user or local area consultation. This has had the effect of displacing those who don’t want to pay such charges to park their cars elsewhere near the Station. Some have chosen to park on Horning Rd West which has had knock on effects for others who occasionally use that section of allowed roadside parking, including buses waiting between journey finish and start times and on residents who either have access obstructed or safe egress vision impeded. Highways and the Police are aware of this recent situation and are monitoring it. So far, I am not aware of any breaches of traffic laws but anyone suspecting any breaches can report them either direct to the Police on 101 or Highways or to me quoting date time, location and vehicle description details.

I welcome your views on these or any other matters which concern you. My contact details are: Tel 01603 783885 or e mail: nigel.dixon@norfolk.gov.uk or NigelNDD@aol.com
