Legislative Update Happy Ne

Few of us would have imagined the 2018 elections and w Yar f m th e ro e C apit ol C ! ity

subsequently the start of 2019 would have shaped up the way they have. We have an entire new cabinet with 3 of the 4 being fresh faces to state politics. New leadership in the Florida Senate and Florida House of Representatives and the absences of several long-time friends due to term limits or retirement. Nevertheless, as the old cliché goes, “the show must go on!” and it certainly will. As a new era begins in the state Capitol, we have the

same opportunities and challenges which perpetually pre- sent themselves; education, education and education! Now more than ever the challenge for each of us is to be en- gaged with our elected officials to develop relationships and help these new leaders understand the importance of what we do: for the youth, for the community; for the state. As we leave the starting block for 2019, inauguration

events were held on January 7th and 8th, these coincided with the first week of legislative committee hearing for 2019. The legislative session begins on Tuesday March 5th and the Florida Farm Bureau’s Taste of Florida reception is scheduled for Wednesday March 6th. Now is the time to meet your legislators, to begin the process of building the relationships. By the time March rolls around, the legisla- tive vortex will be in motion and attention spans get short- er and shorter. In the spirit of educating new faces, we also have a new

Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Nikki Fried. Commissioner Fried is the First Democrat since Bob Crawford to be elected to the Agriculture and Consumer Services post and she is the first female elected to the po- sition. Many will recall Commissioner Terry Rhodes, was

Be Seen, Get Noticed! Advertise in THE FAIRCRACKER,

appointed by Gover- nor Bush and served as the Commission- er of Agriculture and Consumer Services between the terms of Commissioner Crawford and Com- missioner Bronson. Commissioner-Fried, did not grow up with a traditional

agricultural background. Yet, do not be fooled into thinking her background is a handicap. Ms. Fried has a tremendous opportunity to be an ambassador for our industry by help- ing to bridge the communication gap between urban and rural Florida. In addition, she is ready and willing to learn about the diversity of Florida agriculture. To this end, and coming full circle, the table is set for each of us to tell our story, to educate, to give these new leaders the tools they need to understand our businesses, to be our champions! As a final thought, while the elections may not have end-

ed up the way we expected, maybe, in some cases even the opposite of how you cast your vote, the reality is the elections are over and it is time to pull up our “big kid” pants, put on our boots and get to work. The next few years will be a product of what we make it. I know the Federation is laser focused on promoting its members and assisting with the education. So, the real challenge is to each member; are you ready for the adventure? Thank you for continuing to give us the opportunity to

work with you in Tallahassee and we hope to see you soon. T
