Dutch Gold, but Silver Lining for Ireland at Hockey World Cup
An amazing run at
the Hockey World Cup saw Ireland claim Silver Medals after losing out to the top ranked Dutch side in the final. Holland is world number one for a reason and the gulf between the
sides was
evident as Holland dom- inated possession, but Ireland to their credit de- fended well. A goal in the 7th
min-
ute gave Holland the lead and they doubled their advantage in the

minute with another su- perb finish. 2-0 would not have been too bad but another goal right on the stroke of half time, left Ireland with too much to do against the world champions. Still Ireland can hold
champions Holland, and Olympic champions Great Britain were the only games Ireland lost as they topped their group. They defeated India in the quarter finial and Spain in the semi-final. A superb achievement by
these “Chicks with Sticks” who have now Youghal Bowls Club

Harlequins had Rois- in Upton and Yvonne O’Byrne in the squad as Ireland came home to a heroic welcome on a weekend that saw Gary and Paul O’Donovan also claim European Sil- ver Medals in Rowing, while Swimmer Shane Ryan picked up a Bronze Medal for his efforts in the pool, making it a great weekend for minor- ity sport in Ireland.
Well done to all as Ire-
land are certainly punch- ing above their weight in many of these events with the Hockey success a fine example of what can be done if the attitude and application is right.
