Sports Cork U21’s Reach All Ireland Final
Cork 3-26 Wexford 0-12
Cork hurling may be
down but it is certainly far from out, if this smashing display against Wexford, at an immaculate Nolan Park, Kilkenny in the Bord Gáis Energy U21 All-Ire- land semi-final is anything to go by. Following on from their
impressive Munster Final victory, this one was even more emphatic as inside the opening ten minutes Cork were in control. Two well taken goals from full forward Tim O’Mahony in the 5th
and 8th minutes
set Cork on their way and with the support cast also weighing in with some ter- rific scores there was only going to be one outcome. Wexford were with-
out Rory O’Connor, but it mattered little as Cork with Mark Coleman and Darragh Fitzgibbon, dom- inant at midfield had Cork on the front foot through- out and while Shane Casey
had Wexford in front from a 2nd
minute free, it took
Cork just a minute to lev- el through Declan Dalton. While Aaron Maddock put Wexford back in front in the 4th
minute, it was to be
the only time they would lead as Tim O’Mahony struck for the opening goal. His first effort was saved by Jack Cushe, but he followed up to smash to
the net. Deccie Dal-
ton pointed another free before Cork got their sec- ond goal, this time Robbie O’Flynn, Declan Dalton and Shane Kingston did the spadework, before Tim O’Mahony again applied the finish as Cork had opened up a six point gap. Wexford, did play some
neat hurling but a strong Cork defence gave little away. Damien Reck did impress and along with free-taker Seamus Casey, kept Wexford in the game for a while. Cork were in
control and with a steady supply of ball the attack led by Declan Dalton and Shane
Kingston began
to find their range as the point tally climbed and with Sarsfields Liam Healy and clubmate Jack O’Con- nor also on target, Cork led by 2-14 to 0-9 at half time. The game was all but
over at that stage with the second half again belong- ing to Cork who struck for a third goal in the 40t minute with Liam Healy applying the finish. An injury to Declan Dalton forced
the Fr O’Neill’s
man off after contributing eight points and Cork and his club will be hoping that the knee injury is not too bad. His replacement Aar- on Myres made a contri- bution, shooting over two points from free’s while another sub Conor Cala- hane shot over four points as Cork easily saw out the game. Wexford could only manage three
points in
that second half and Cork can now look forward to a final meeting with either Galway or beaten Munster
finalist Tipperary. It was another job well done by Cork and they are now just one win away from claim- ing the title. Denis Ring, possibly a
Cork senior manager in the making has done a great job so far with this talented bunch and if they can produce another simi- lar display in the final, then they will be in with a great chance of claiming a first victory since 1998 and we know that Cork won the Senior in 1999 with the U21 side paving the way for that success. Limerick has shown that U21 suc- cess is vital to senior devel- opment and Cork will be looking to break a 20 year gap in the final. Some of these lads were not even born when Cork last won so a victory is vital for Cork hurling at present. Scorers for Cork: Tim O’Mahony 2-2, Declan Dalton
