Giving Back to the Community is a Goal for Midleton Lions Club
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
A proposed shel-
tered housing develop- ment, aimed at retire- ment aged residents, has been given a wel- come boost. Midleton Lions Club
have been gifted €2,300 the proceeds of the Fort to Fort charity cycle. The presentation was made during a recent visit by the groups District Gover- nor, Teresa Dineen.
Ms
Dineen was in Midleton to see how District 133 serve the community. This year the East Cork
group is aiming to raise as much as possible to devel- op a third of an acre site in Midleton town centre, to construct 6 single sto- rey units, similar to those located at Roxboro house. In, 2007 the Midleton Li- ons Club opened 7 single occupancy units at
the
Bailick Road location. The houses consist of a fully fitted kitchen, sitting room, dining room and
bathroom facilities. The development is fully secure with 24 hour security on site. The sheltered hous- ing is designed to meet the needs of Midleton’s elder- ly who need occasional support and assistance, but do not require full residen- tial care. The facility also com-
prises of a day room that is used by the fellow resi- dents and fellow senior citizens from the area. As more of us age, figures show that an increased life expectancy, lower birth rates and increased emi- gration have dramatically changed the
these figures emphasise the need for more central- ly located sheltered hous-
ing units, like those pro- vided by the Lions Club, allowing
the elderly to
live independently in the community for as long as possible.

Cork County Coun- has invested
€275,000 in the pur- chase of a new spe- cialised 26 tonne ve- locity patcher for the East Cork area. This is a state of the art road repair vehicle and brings the total number of these ve- locity patchers to 14 across the county. A specialised Bitumen
storage tank has also been installed in the Coun- cil depot at Killeagh to service the patcher. This Bitumen tank has recent- ly been commissioned and it is expected that the Patcher will be fully operational in early Au- gust 2018. A loader has also been purchased and deployed to the Killeagh yard to complement the operation in East Cork. An increased output of pothole repairs is antic- ipated due to having full facilities to supply the patcher locally which will eliminate
unproductive
travel time. The
velocity patcher
operates by blowing out any water and debris in the pothole, primes the pothole
and builds up the patch with a mixture of
with bitumen hot
bitumen and chippings (at high velocity) and tops off the repair with dry chippings. It heralds a new era in road repair techniques and will result in higher quality road repairs in the East Cork area.
Cork County Council
intends continuing with this very significant annu- al fleet replacement pro- gramme, incorporating new technologies to assist its direct labour force in efficient and effective operations across the county. It demonstrates the Council’s continued commitment to carrying out significant opera- tions across the county by direct labour. An or- der has also been placed for an additional velocity patcher for the Dunman- way area, with delivery expected towards the end of 2018.
