ing against a stiff second half wind. We would have definitely taken that be- fore the game. We were in shock and obviously Agh- abullogue were pinching themselves, but it was a deserved lead as Youghal were absolutely brilliant and giving it all for the jersey. We got the players focussed on not letting this one slip, ‘Counties are hard to win and we had the Cup in our sights. Donnacha Ruxton and Marty came on and did very well. Our lead was slipping away from us, it was down to 5 points when Aghabullogue were awarded a penalty, up to this point Brian Lynch was playing superbly in goal, but he could not save the penalty, it was down to 2 points and Charlie got our only score of the second half, Baylor took shots off the goal line and Nichol- son was having a stormer. They got it back to 1 point and the whistle sound, re- lief, jubilation, exhaustion, pride and overwhelming joy, it was hard to describe the feelings as the Youghal crowd rushed the field and celebrated with hugs, back slaps and of course a ren- dition of “Up the Youghal Boys”. County Champi- ons, Bobby received the cup and the roar went up. Vincent Murray and

Brien Murphy are the joint Managers, but we got great support on the day and though out the campaign from Anthony O’Regan, Cormac Gal- vin, Mags and PJ McCa- rthy, H Nicholson, Mark Hammer Walsh, Tom Hickey, Ciara and John Lynch, Catríona Hill, Fio- na Coleman Walsh, thank you all. Assumpta and

John Parker helped a lot, from helping with visiting teams, to offering words of wisdom during and after the matches, CEL- EBRATION TIME: I re- member as a kid beeping the horns going around town and the players will never forget

these cele-

brations and being give a Garda Escort around town. Thank you to the local Gardai for making the day more special. Eo- chaill Abú

Cúl Camps 2018 On the week beginning Monday July 23rd Áras

once more

, Club came

alive to the bustling sound of over 200 happy, excited children (and even more excited parents!) as the most eagerly anticipated week of summer began, CÚL CAMP!!

This years, Cúl Camp our Minor

hurlers were on the road again this time down to Ballygarvan. After a slow start we went into half time with a slender lead thanks to some super scores from Dion O’Donaghue. Bally- garvan really came at us in the second half and went ahead with some great play, but Youghal kept at it and were unlucky to lose by a single point in the end. Some serious training this week as championship is fixed for next week, Eo- chaill Abú!!!

On Thursday 2nd of

August we played Kiltha Óg in the first round of the Championship in Kil- leagh. The first half was a great game of hurling and we went in at half time just a point down and well in it. Unfortunately just into the second half Youghal were reduced to 14 men following a straight

red

card. Fair play to the lads they stuck at it but being a man down just proved too much. With two league games remaining they have a chance to make the league playoffs and hope-

was one of the biggest we have hosted in many years, over 200 children daily took to the field for 4 hours of playing their national sport of hurling, camogie and Gaelic foot- ball. The children, full of excitement and expecta- tions were not let down. The work by our local coaches and helpers was outstanding, the task of keeping a group of up to 15 children entertained and interested is not an easy job, as I’m sure all parents will agree with, but the coaches were great! They kept everything rele- vant to the ages they were dealing with, sometimes playing games with the smaller ages that allowed them to rest in the hot days, yet still have fun, up to the bigger groups where the boys and girls just wanted to play hurling or football matches against each other to see who was the strongest!! Obviously,

that was the girls!! All our coaches were club mem- bers that are involved with coaching teams in the club or young men, that have worked their way through Cúl Camp. First by going to it as a child, then pro- gressing to being a helper when they were teenagers and now, finally, becoming a Cúl Camp coach!! They all agreed, it was much easier to be the child than it was to be the coach!! Again, all our helpers

play within the underage side of the GAA, Camo- gie or Ladies football club here in Youghal. These U15/ 16’s will be hoping to become coaches over the next few years. It’s a great way for our kids to get a taste of what it’s like to be a coach, to give up your time, to try and connect with children and help them on their path of playing GAA. The hard job of coaching often goes unappreciated, but for these teenagers, after spending a week of coach- ing, I’m sure they’ll go on to appreciate the work and

effort their own coaches put in to them! Monday morning start-

ed great with the weather gods looking after us again this year, the children all knew what groups they were in and what zones of the field they were to base themselves in for the week, so by 10.10am, all the coaches were out playing/ coaching the children. By home time at 2pm, the children were tired but happy. On Wednesday, we were thrilled to be chosen as the Official Kelloggs Cúl Camp in Cork and we were extremely excited to welcome the most success- ful GAA player of ALL time to our club, Rena Buckley. Rena is the win- ner of 18 All Ireland titles, 7 Camogie and 11 football and she holds 5 all stars!!! That’s a lot of stars!! Rena met all the children in the camp and coached some of the groups. She was brilliant with the children, encouraging them all and giving out tips and advice. Rena was in no rush and spent lots of time with us

here in Youghal. She was very inspiring but she had better watch her back as I heard two young ladies talk about her after, saying how they wanted to smash her record when they are older!! Rena... beware!! Wednesday turned out

to be a busy day as Rena was no longer gone out the gate and Cork hurler Shane Kingston called in to say hello. He got to talk to some of the groups and stayed in the car park for a long time once camp was over signing autographs. Thanks very much to Rena and Shane for visit- ing us here in Youghal and talking to the children, The advice of a Cork star is always listened to!! On Friday morning,

some of the local Irish Lifeboat personnel called to talk to the children about water safety. Given our town’s location and the good weather recent- ly, this is a very important topic and the children all listened carefully to what was being said. Thank you to the crew for calling and I’m sure your words of ad- vice will be remembered if ever needed by the chil- dren. The success of any

camp has to be down to the help it gets. Again, we are so lucky to have great help here in our club. At all times we had a mini- mum of 4 adults (double at lunch time) walking around the field doing the toilet runs, tying laces and bringing the children to

the busiest place in camp … First Aid!! We had quite a few regulars in First Aid, most (thank god!) only came for a chat and a rest, many made a miraculous recovery when they heard of a match or game go- ing on out in the field!! THANK YOU so much to the parents that walked the field, (some were there every day!) and to all the First Aiders that kept all the children safe, without your help, the camp would not run as smoothly as it did. Go raibh maith agat. Thank you to Ken and all the staff in Club Áras for the immaculate condition of the field and facilities. Thank you to our local co-ordinators: Paudie O’Brien and Shane Sup- ple for your help and ad- vice, its hard enough to run one camp but ye’ have many many more!! Thank you to Tony,

John, Áine and Catríona for the organising of an- other great year. We, as a club have received great feedback from the parents and are already looking forward to Cúl Camp 2019!

Táimid ag tnúth leis an mbliain seo chugainn!!
