“No Brainer” Public Art Fund can make Big Difference with Little Money
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
Cork County Council
is to consider increasing its use of a Government backed scheme, which dedicates one percent of the cost of public building developments to artwork.
Introduced in 1978, the
percent for Art Scheme allows public bodies ap- ply for additional fund- ing that is ring-fenced for artworks associated with publically funded con- struction programmes.
In 1997 the Govern-
ment extended the pro- gramme to include capital projects across all Gov- ernment departments.
Local Authorities can
apply for one percent of the building cost up to a maximum of €64,000.
lowing the tabling of a Motion by Cllr
The move comes fol- Melis-
sa Mullane at a recent Sitting
of Cork County
Council. The Sinn Féin Cllr said
it should be “obligatory” for Cork County Council to apply for the additional grant when applying for Planning Permission for new schemes.
“Not only is it good to
draw down funding that is available, it’s also good for the arts. We have a large amount of artists across the county who find it hard to get work, and one percent of a major scheme is a huge amount of money.”
Fianna Fail Cllr Gearóid Murphy said “it is definitely an initiative way of supporting artists in the community.”
Hegarty said she, too, supported
Fine Gael Cllr Mary the
Motion “it’s very difficult for art-
ists to make a living, and they make an economic impact on the area.”
Sinn Féin Cllr Eoin
Jeffers said “it’s a no brainer-the benefits are massive, whether
good
or bad the art is a per- son’s opinion. There are massive spin offs in terms of employment for the smaller artists.”
Padraig Barrett, Direc-
tor of Corporate Service said “the Local Authority can only ring-fence fund- ing upon confirmation from the relative parent Department that the per cent for Art scheme fund- ing will be made available as part of their overall capital estimate.”
The Motion is to be discussed further by the Council Planning Policy Unit.

Cork Co. Council Providing an Invaluable Beachguard Service The
At this peak holiday time beachguard Team
are reminding the public to please be responsible around water, especial- ly with the good weather forecast.
Supervise chil-
dren at all times & never swim alone or in quarries, reservoirs or places that are not designated swim- ming areas. Do not bring inflatables to the beach & never drink and swim. The beachguards on
the County Cork Beach- es are on duty 10.30am to 7pm daily. The Beach- lifeguard Service issues a morning Beach report for every lifeguarded beach in Co. Cork, this is done on Cork Co Council Beach- lifeguard Service facebook page. The feedback on this resource from the public has been very favourable with lots of people com- menting how useful the daily report is and how
helpful the water safety tips are. So don’t delay check it out today!
To summarise, an aver-
age of 198 pieces of safety advice was given, 92 acci- dents prevented, & 11 first aids carried out per day during July 2018.
As lifeguarding is all
about prevention the num- ber of accidents prevented demonstrates the proactive role the beachguards car- ryout on a daily basis dur- ing the bathing season.
We would like to thank
the Beachguards for their great work this season and the members of the pub- lic for co-operating with our Beachlifeguard Ser- vice. We would also like to thank Cork Water Safety and everyone who has as- sisted in our training from the Induction Day to our
weekly & monthly team training which is ongoing at present and will con- tinue until the end of the bathing season.
The Beachguard Ser-
vice facilitated an Educa- tion Day on July the 26th last which was well sup- ported by the public. Great learning took place and lots of families benefited from interacting with the Beachlifeguards. A number of fun Satur-
day mornings were host- ed, where the Beachguard Teams facilitated fun inter- active activities based on water safety. This was thoroughly enjoyed by
all.
