County Champions U13A Football On Saturday morning August in Mayfield,

the Youghal U13 football- ers were crowned County Champions after defeat- ing Aghabullogue by 1 point. Firstly, the path to the final saw us beating St. Catherines, Kiltha Óg and Killeagh before qual- ifying for the Semi Final against Sliabh Rúa. The preliminary games were tough encounters and the game
against Killeagh
was particularly tight. Every player on the panel got game time and as the games went on, we could see a massive
improve-
ment in the skill levels. Conor Galvin was asked to play in goal, generally a strong outfield player, he was excellent in goal and was very cute in his dis- tribution. Our backs were
made up of Coady Hick- ey – played a great game against Kiltha’ and linked up very well, Dylan Byrne – a versatile player who always gives 110% and is going to be a top class player, Donnacha Ruxton who is very solid on the left flank, PJ McCarthy at full back is solid as a rock and puts his body on the line, Niall Baylor – very intelligent player who al- ways makes the right de- cisions and seems to be in the right place all the time, Brian Lynch who packs a serious shot with his left leg, Oisín Walsh who played an incredible semi final, Liam Durkin – an- other U12 player but with the vision of a senior play- er. Marty Desmond who was solid and committed to every challenge. Our Midfield pairing was Charlie O’Brien and James Murray, they were our main scorers and have almost a sixth sense of
where the other person is as their link up play was excellent
throughout the
campaign. Up front we had Christopher Buckley who showed some slick touches and has a very high skill level, Aaron O’Donnell Murphy can kick equally well with both feet and scored a cracker of a goal in the preliminary games, Wil- liam Thompson – he was brilliant in every match and showed his pure class, Robert Lenihan who is turning into a handful for most defenders and is getting better with each match, Fionn Hill – crafty, slick and one for the fu- ture, Jayden Casey was on holidays and only made it back for the final and we were so grateful that he did as he was brilliant, Jason Innes who came back to the team in recent months and he is making good progress. Last is our captain Bobby Nicholson

who led his team very well with great determination, commitment and skill. The Semi Final was
against Sliabh Rúa who are a combination of Bal- lymartyl and Belgooly. It was played in Riverstick on one of the hottest days of the year. It was a big step up in skill and movement. Rúa were strong but we eventually settled, James and Charlie cracked in a couple of goals and points each, we led at half time by 2 points. Rúa came flying at us in the second half and we lost our Keep- er Conor Galvin and lost any momentum we had. They hit us with the kitch- en sink, hitting crossbars, balls whizzing past posts, it was full on battle stations and this was champion- ship at its best. Our backs started to tackle better and we were now winning the dirty ball, Oisín, Niall and PJ were really to the fore. Our midfielders worked some great scores and Will was making some great runs up front. Aaron,
Fionn, Dylan and Chris were putting in a Trojan effort up front. When the final whistle blew, it was with great relief and ex- citement as we had won by 2 points, Youghal 4-5 to Sliabh Rúa 2-9. The Final – we knew it was going to take a mira- cle to beat Aghabullogue as they had beaten us last year by about 30 points and had won all their league games by over 20 points on average. We
trained very hard for the final and focussed on key areas, mainly defence as we were really up against it. If you get a level of be- lief instilled into kids, it’s amazing what results you can achieve. They left the dressing room as a very focussed and motivated team. Wham, we hit their net inside a couple of min- utes, Jayden billowing the net, then Will beat a few defenders and slotted an- other goal, Charlie then
got a cracker followed by 2 James Murray points. Our backs were touch tight and defending brilliantly and putting their bodies on the line. Up front, Aaron and Christopher were tracking back every time and put- ting Aghabullogue under pressure, Jayden was prov- ing to be a handful and we were going route one and hitting every ball directly into him. Half time and Youghal are 7 points up (3-2 to 4 points) but play-
