O’Keeffe Welcomes Changes to Fair Deal Scheme

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

Fianna Fail TD

for Cork East, Kevin O’Keeffe, has welcomed a Government move to overhaul the controver- sial Fair Deal Scheme. Introduced almost a

decade ago, the Nursing Home Support Scheme provides financial sup- port to people who need long-term nursing care. At present those par- ticipating in the

Fair

Deal Programme must pay up to 80% of their income and 7.5% of the

value of their assets to- wards their cost of care, while the State meets the balance. The value of a person’s

home is only included in the financial assessment for the first three years of a person’s time in care. Deputy O’Keeffe said

the practice was “creat- ing a hindrance to the efficient operation of family farm and small business operations, as the inheritors could in- cur enormous bills.” The decision by the to extend

Government the three

year cap to farms and businesses

means that the stress and worry caused to fami- ly and relatives facing a huge bill on inheriting the farm or family, has been removed. Under the Confidence

and Supply Agreement with Fianna Fail, the 3 year cap will be extend- ed to farms and business where a family member has carried on the oper- ation for six years. Mr O’Keeffe said he is looking forward to the finer details, when pub- lished in legislative form, and will be supportive of Government in bringing to the Dáil.

Youghal4All Continue the Good Works

Last week was a very

busy week for Youghal4All. On Sunday they organised a fundraising barbeque in aid of the Moby Dick Sculpture

on the Mall

Beach in Youghal. It was a family fun day with plenty of food; beach games, and dancing to music by DJ Ger. The weather held up and a great day was had by all.

On Tuesday night the

group headed out for a couple of hours to do a clean-up of some of the main tourist areas in the town, starting at Crom- well’s Arch and moving on to the Jail Steps, with both areas getting a much need- ed makeover.

On Wednesday morn-

ing, Adrian Hyde (Chair- person) and Helen Hea- phy Grainge (Secretary) represented Youghal4All at the judging of the Pride of Place Awards at the Mall Arts Centre. Youghal was nominated by Cork Coun-
