sport@eastcorkjournal.ie County Junior B Football Replay “First Title for Ballinacurra”

Ballinacurra 3-11 Grange 2-7

Thursday, 9th

August 2018

Ballinacurra and

Grange were back in ac- tion last Friday night in the replay of the county junior “B” football championship in Pairc Ui Rinn. This time round the weather was much more favourable and we were treated to a much better contest with victory in the finish going to a bet- ter balanced Ballinacurra side that took their chanc- es when they came and by half time they were well on their way to capturing their first county title in the grade. The

opening quarter

was full of attacking foot- ball with Grange drawing first blood with a point from a Kurt Wheeler free in the 7th

minute. Ballina-

curra levelled a minute later through Jake Hegar- ty, now operating at

full

forward and he was to be- come a central figure in the village win. Kelvin Krus- chel operating in attack this week and Glen Harty weighed in with points from play for Ballinacurra and when Jake Hegarty converted from play, Ball- inacurra were getting into the groove. Points from Dave Keating and another Kurt Wheeler free left just

a point between the sides at the end of the opening quarter, 0-4 to 0-3 in fa- vour of Ballinacurra. Ballinacurra who had

two changes in person- nel and several positional switches, were

playing a

much more fluid game on this occasion and with Jake Hegarty as a target man on the edge of the square they had good options.

James

Nagle also moved to mid- field, but he popped up in attack in the 17th

minute

as Hegarty did a Seamus Darby type

leap before

parting to Nagle who blast- ed to the net. That score started a Ballinacurra pur- ple patch with scores from Hegarty, Kelvin Kruschel, Nagle and Hegarty who all kicked points to just one Kurt Wheeler free in re- ply for Grange, who were finding it difficult to cope with the strong running Ballinacurra side. By Half time Ballinacurra had tak- en control as they caught Grange napping with a quick free that saw Glen Harty finish to the net in the 26th

minute. Then

just before half time the strength of Hegarty was again evident as he won possession and laid off to

James Nagle who was up- ended for a penalty. Dami- en Daly stepped forward to slot home and at half time Ballinacurra led by 3-9 to 0-5 and were full value for their lead. The

second half saw

Jake Hegarty extend the lead with a well taken point from play in the opening minute. However, they would add just one further point through Hegarty as they were now forced into a rear-guard action with Grange pushing forward in search of scores. Col- in Scott managed a point while on the three-quar-

ter mark Grange won a penalty that was expertly converted by Brian Cash- man in the 45th

minute.

It was a lifeline of sorts, but a Jake Hegarty point soon restored order. While Alan McNamara kicked a Grange point, they really needed goals to make any impression. They came close once

or twice before McNama- ra placed Niall McCarthy for a 56th

minute goal. It

came too late to make any real difference as by now Ballinacurra had one hand on the cup. Sterling de- fending saw Ballinacurra

retain possession as they closed out the game and hold out for a victory that makes up for losing in 2015 and the draw last week so at the third time of asking the “Village” come out on top. After the game county board chairperson Trac- ey Kennedy presented the county junior “B” cup to Ballinacurra captain Ste- phen O’Brien.
