Post Office Closures Speed the Destruction of Rural Communities and Will Lead to Rural Isolation and More Mental Health Problems- Pat Buckley TD

Sinn Fein’s spokesper- son on Mental Health Pat Buckley TD, is calling on the minister to intervene and prevent closure of over a 100 rural post offices and destruction of rural com- munities. Deputy Buckley said: “An

Post’s retirement deal is a very worrying development for rural communities and will no doubt lead to further decline of services in rural

Ireland. It is estimated that over

100 small post offices are at risk of closure because of new contractual arrange- ments with An Post

that

have come about as a result of the attractive retirement deal that An Post is offering to existing postmasters. Is this part of the Gov- ernments project

Ireland 2040 plan to develop rural

Ireland, by destroying rural communities and increasing rural decline with the re- moval of local services? A community with a

standalone post office that has a low level of business must be given every oppor- tunity to keep the post office in their community.

A plan must be put in

place to allow that post of- fice remain in its own prem-

ises or for another local business to take it over. If the Minister is serious

about reversing rural de- cline then he must intervene to save these post offices from closure. Rural isolation will in-

crease. Rural isolation will lead to loneliness and loneli- ness will lead to a deteriora- tion of you’re mental health and we could see even more suicides.

With rural pub closures

and cuts to rural transpor- tation and now pending closures to our post offices, rural Ireland is slowly being desolated.

You’re local post office is

the heartbeat of the rural town and village. It’s not just

for sending post but

it’s also the weekly meeting place for many people that may not have spoken to

another person in a week. How are these people going to manage their daily lives now?

If you don’t drive and

there is not a daily bus ser- vice or even a weekly ser- vice how are these people supposed to pay their bills, collect their pensions? Some of these post offices also double as the local grocery store that’s gone too. It’s a bad, bad day for

rural Ireland and these cut- backs must be stoped.

I would encourage all

communities facing a post office closure to appeal to An Post through their re- view mechanism which can be done in writing to review@anpost.ie or Inde- pendent Reviewer, An Post GPO, Dublin 1. Rural Ireland cannot al- low this to happen.”
